HCOP Summer Enrichment Programs

The Summer Enrichment Programs are exciting 6-week, non-credit academic programs designed to prepare students for study in Health Sciences and Pre-Med. There is no charge for these programs and all books and supplies are provided. Students may receive a stipend for participation HCOP seeks students who are highly motivated and committed to academic excellence.

The HCOP SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM, LEVEL I is an exciting six-week, 180-hour, non-credit comprehensive academic program that provides instruction in mathematics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, English composition, study skills, and cultural competence. Scientific education, hands on laboratory experience and career awareness activities compliment the program. SEP I participants are disadvantaged incoming UWM freshmen pre-health majors who wish to pursue a degree in health sciences. Also eligible for selection are current UWM undergraduate pre-health or pre-med freshmen who need additional preparation to be successful in their second year. The students' UWM placement test scores and previous progress in high school or college courses determine SEP I course placement.

SELECTION CRITERIA for Incoming Freshman

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident that meets the criteria of a disadvantaged family.
  • Should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 with a strong science and math background.
  • Should have an ACT composite score of at least 19.
  • Complete the application process which includes an interview.

SELECTION CRITERIA for Continuing College Students

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident that meets the criteria of a disadvantaged family.
  • Should have a minimum GPA of 2.5 with a strong science and math background at the college level.
  • Complete the application process which includes an interview.

COST
The program is free, books materials and supplies are provided.

STIPEND
Students may receive a stipend for participation based on eligibility requirements and program funding. This application will determine your eligibility for the review course and the stipend. A copy of the applicant's family tax statements will be required at the time of your HCOP Interview. Stipends will be issued after satisfactory completion of the program. The HCOP SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM LEVEL II (SEPI I) is an exciting six-week, 180-hour, comprehensive academic non-credit program that introduces students to an overview of health care professions. Undergraduate students who are pre-health and pre-professional majors receive instruction taught by CHS-HCOP faculty. The faculty prepares students for upper level science courses, provides clinical laboratory experience and development of cultural competence. Successful completion of SEP II enhances students' likelihood of meeting requirements for acceptance to the major.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident that meets the criteria of a disadvantaged family.
  • Must be enrolled UWM student pursuing health or pre-med major
  • Must have competed one year or 18 credits at UWM including required freshman science/math courses
  • Minimum UWM GPA 2.3
  • Complete the application process which includes an interview

HCOP Internship Program

Through the HCOP INTERNSHIP PROGRAM undergraduate health and pre-health majors gain knowledge of the various health care disciplines while working with typical populations under the direct supervision of health care professionals. Participants learn directly from service providers while applying theory in a practical setting. Early experiences also allow participants to become aware of the health care work environment, the value of interdisciplinary services, and client/patient needs and services. The Internship is non-credit. Participants must commit to spending 180 hours with their mentor (flexible hours).

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident that meets the criteria of a disadvantaged family.
  • Must be second or third year enrolled UWM CHS or Med-Prep student
  • Minimum GPA of 2.3
  • Have completed at least 18 credit hours of course work
  • Complete the application process

COST
There is no cost to participants for the Internship Program.

Open Enrollment. A Background Check is required as part of the application process.

DATE OF PARTICIPATION
Internships will start upon completion of application process and placement determination. All students are required to complete a 2-3 paper summarizing their experience.

HCOP Internship Program


MCAT Intensive Science Review Course

Students who wish to obtain a competitive edge for medical school, are invited to join other area underrepresented and disadvantaged students and participate in the MCAT Intensive Science Review Course. This comprehensive science review course will address: Physics, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biology and Verbal Reasoning. Each session employs frequent and repeated self-testing and a fully simulated MCAT exercise. Students will be able to monitor their progress as they study reducing weaknesses and reinforcing strengths.

The Science Instructor, Dr. James L. Flowers, is African American and a native Milwaukeean. He holds a medical degree from the Harvard Medical School of Public Health. He is also a graduate of the Harvard-MIT program in Health Sciences and Technology. How to Study for the MCAT, authored by Dr. Flowers was American's leading MCAT preparatory book for more than fifteen years. Dr. Flowers is also the co-author of the Princeton Review Flowers & Silver MCAT.

A Verbal Reasoning component is also included. Content includes: overview of tips and strategies; explanation and answers to practice questions. Students are required to take a verbal reasoning pre-test prior to attending the class.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident that meets the criteria of a disadvantaged family.
  • Disadvantaged and underrepresented students who are interested in enhancing their MCAT scores.
  • Although it will not prevent your participation, you should have completed at least one year of Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. In addition, you should have completed an introductory course in Biology and 2 semesters of English.

COST
There is no cost for the program. All books, materials, supplies and lunch are provided free of charge to the participant.

PRIORITY DEADLINE

Pre-test must be submitted two weeks prior to the start date. The pre-test will be forwarded upon acceptance to the program.
