The On-Campus Experience
Convenience
The UWM experience should be more than a few hours a week spent in a classroom. It should be an opportunity to become involved in the campus community, meet new friends, network with those who have similar aspirations, experience the diversity that an urban University can offer, and learn beyond the limits of what a classroom lecture can teach.
We believe that you can best experience UWM by living on campus. Why? Read on!
There is no need to bus, drive or walk to campus for class or to use the library. You're already there, and in January that can be a comforting thought. Need to use a computer? Want to work out? Need to copy those notes you borrowed? Time to do your laundry? Hungry for pizza? Want to see a movie? Looking for a place to hang out with friends? You don't even need to leave the complex! Sandburg offers all this and more in the Sandburg Computer Center, the Sandburg Fitness Center, Channel night club, the Palm Gardens Restaurant, the Sandburg Cafe, the Emporium General Store and the Flicks Theater.
Still looking for more excitement? Located on the east side of Milwaukee, seven blocks from Lake Michigan, the University community enjoys the recreational, cultural, and employment advantages of a large city, while being located in an attractive residential neighborhood. Sandburg and Purin are located within walking distance of a wide variety of restaurants, banks, specialty shops, hospitals, cinemas, county parks, and the lakefront activities. Bus lines are available to provide transportation to shopping centers, the County Zoo, sports and water recreation in the County Park System, museums, Summerfest, professional baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer, and a variety of professional entertainment. Students receive a free Milwaukee County bus pass for their use during the academic year, making travel around Milwaukee even more convenient.
Networking
Wondering what course to take, what prof to choose, which minor to declare or which art supplies store really offers the best deal on all that stuff you have to buy for "basic art experience?" Looking for a tutor in Calc, someone to proof your German paper or just a different perspective on how to approach designing your latest architecture project? Living on campus gives you access to what we believe to be the most comprehensive, effective and convenient student advising, tutoring, and brainstorming network on campus. Perhaps that's why our residents have historically maintained higher GPAs than students living off campus. And, who knows? Maybe your suitemate's mom can get you the internship of your dreams.
Opportunity
University Housing offers a wide range of student staff positions for residents. Many University Housing residents are also members of a University Housing staff, gaining experience in areas ranging from customer service to peer counseling to maintenance.
Social Life
With over 2,700 residents at one address, there's always something going on. And, no matter what your interests are, there is certain to be someone in the halls who shares them.
Peace of Mind
When you sign your contract with us, you know exactly what your year living on campus will cost you. There are no hidden costs such as telephone hook-ups, cable bills or astronomical mid-winter heat bills.
University Housing facilities aren't just buildings on campus. Its services, opportunities, convenience, and resources, plus its home for more than 2,700 people. It's the place to truly experience UWM.
