  DIFFERENTIAL TUITION

As of fall semester 2004, the UWM Peck School of the Arts will apply a differential tuition of $10 per credit for all students enrolled in 100- through 699- level courses with the exception of its eight largest General Education Requirement (GER) courses. The courses excluded from differential tuition assessment are Music 100, Music 101, Music 102, Theatre BA 100, Art 100, Art 105, Art 106, and Art 124. Differential tuition fees will increase to $15 per credit in 2005-06 and to $20 per credit in 2006-07. Differential tuition will be conducted as a three-year pilot program through 2007-08 when it will be reviewed for modification and renewal.

The revenue generated from differential tuition is used to address three primary areas of student need:

  • student access to courses
  • quality of instruction
  • technology support

The revenue generated from this initiative allows the school to offer more course sections where enrollments warrant. It allows the school to hire and retain the best professional artists as instructors. And, it enhances the school's ability to more frequently upgrade instructional computer labs and studio equipment used by students.

Throughout the year the school will post recommendations developed by students. The school will also post information on the differential tuition income and expenditures in order to provide an ongoing report on how the program is managed. Finally, the school will post a report on how the differential tuition is used to support course access, quality of instruction, and technology for students.

Differential tuition was approved by the UWM Student Senate and the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents in February 2004.
