Who is required to have a laptop computer?

If I am not in one of the designated program areas, may I still take advantage of the discounts offered through the PSOA Apple Store?
Any individual student enrolled in a course of study leading to a degree or certification in a public or private Higher Education Institution is eligible to purchase. In addition, any individual who has been accepted by a public or private Higher Education Institution and who has responded by stating his or her intent to enroll in the institution is eligible to purchase. Any faculty member of a public or private Higher Education institution and any staff member who is directly associated with the Institution’s academic mission and is not temporary, employed as a contractor, or acting as a consultant on behalf of the Institution
is eligible to purchase.

Am I required to have a laptop if I entered
UWM prior to the fall of 2004?

The PSOA laptop requirement applies to students who have entered UWM in the fall of 2004 or after and who have met the criteria for the participating programs. Students who have entered UWM prior to the fall of 2004 and who meet the criteria for one of the participating programs are not required to participate, but are strongly urged to purchase the laptop computer designated by the program. These students will be eligible for the same discount offered by Apple for the PSOA laptop program. All students should check with their program faculty with questions regarding laptop requirements.

Am I required to buy a new computer?
Students who already own a laptop or would like to purchase or borrow a used laptop may do so as long as the computer meets or exceeds the specified hardware and software requirements. Please consult your instructor or program area head if you have a question about the suitability of a particular computer.

Am I required to purchase an Apple computer?
Students who wish to purchase a PC laptop instead should consult with their instructors or program area heads to be sure their computer will meets or exceeds curricular requirements. The Peck School of the Arts strongly recommends Apple PowerBook computers and coursework will be designed for these machines.

Can financial aid assist me in paying
for my computer and software?

If you are a financial aid recipient, you can ask for a budget increase to add the cost of your computer and software to your financial aid package. Most students will be able to use alternative loans and (Parent) PLUS loans to assist them with these costs. Click here for more information on financial aid.

Will I have my financial aid before the start of classes?
Financial aid is disbursed ten days prior to the first day of classes. Excess cash checks will be mailed the Thursday or Friday prior to the start of classes. Once you receive your funding you may use this to pay for your computer and software.

Should I insure my laptop for loss, theft or damage?
We strongly recommend that you purchase insurance.

Where do I get antivirus software?
Students, Staff and Faculty members currently enrolled or working at UWM can download Network Associates’ Virex, free of charge, here: http://www4.uwm.edu/imt/software/antivirus/MAC.htm
