SO YOU WANT TO BE AN ART MAJOR.... The portfolio review will be used to recruit talented art students and for appropriate class placement. Students with portfolios here by Thursday March 15, 2008 will be included in the jury process for Department of Visual Art partial scholarships. To be admitted to the Department of Visual Art, applicants (incoming freshman and transfer students) must first apply to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and must meet general university academic requirements. Applicants to the Visual Art program also must submit a portfolio of art works and additional supporting materials for review by Visual Art program faculty: 1. Department of Visual Art application form. Click here to download the form (word format). 2. Portfolio of art works. The portfolio ideally should include approximately 8-10 examples of the applicant’s artwork (slides, photographs, or digital images on CD-ROM preferred), preferably from courses taken over the last two years. Applicants should identify the artwork by media, size, and year of completion. Digital images should be in .jpg or powerpoint. Be sure to put your name on all CD's, slides or photographs. 3. Copies of high school and (for transfer students) college transcripts. (Unofficial copies are acceptable for this purpose.) 4. 1-2 page personal statement describing how your past experiences, interests, and concerns relate to your college choice and career goals. Students who have not had significant prior exposure to formal art courses, or who do not have a substantial portfolio of art works to submit, are encouraged to write more extensive personal statements. We will accept students who do not have an art background, but have a desire to learn. 5. Two confidential letters of recommendation, preferably from instructors familiar with the student’s artwork and/or academic ability. (Letters should be submitted in sealed envelopes and will remain confidential and the property of UWM.) Applicants must submit their portfolios as one complete packet containing all of the above items, and may do so in person or by mail to the address indicated below. A self-addressed stamped envelope large enough to hold work samples also must be included for the return of art work samples. Portfolios should not be submitted along with the initial application for admission to the university, and will not be accepted via email. Mail your portfolio to: Recommended submission deadlines: February 15 for those applying
