February 1, 2007
Dear Colleagues,
This letter is intended to be our last formal communication before the
Conference. The North Central Regional Conference has taken exciting
shape since our last website posting. In addition to a few reminders,
there are many new and exciting updates we would like to share with you,
as well as informing you of new information now available on our website.
Let's
get the reminders out of the way first.
If you have not already done
so, please return your tech information for both the Adjudicated Concerts
and the Informal Concert to Iain
Court via fax (414.229.3335) or email courti@uwm.edu as soon as possible. Iain will acknowledge his receipt of the necessary
forms; all technical questions pertaining to the concerts need to
be directed to him. You should have received a checklist from me
noting
what other conference-related documents we have and what we are missing
from your school. If you did not receive this, please contact Darci
immediately. And please send us that missing information as soon
as possible to ensure
a smooth and finely tuned conference.

Now for the updates
New Adjudicator!
We would like you to join us in welcoming our new adjudicator,
Helanius J. Wilkins, who will be joining Doug and Elizabeth as
our panel of
distinguished adjudicators. Check out his bio on the website.
We are really excited
that he is coming!
Meet the Adjudicators
At 3pm on Saturday, there will be a Meet the Adjudicators session
in the Mainstage Theatre prior to the Adjudication Concert
I at 3:45pm. Come and hear more about them as a proctored discussion
introduces
them to us.
Master Classes
Highlighting our interconnectedness to the community theme,
we are thrilled to offer you the opportunity to take master
classes
from
the artistic
directors of six of our partner organizations ? Ko-Thi Dance
Company, Milwaukee Ballet II, Your Mother Dances, City Ballet
Theatre, Danceworks
Performance Group and Wildspace Dance Company.
ADF Auditions
A representative from ADF will be holding an audition class
during our festival on Mon. Mar. 19, from 12:30-2:30pm
(please see the
Timetable of Classes for location of the audition). Students
may either fill
out
an application ahead of time via the ADF website (if they
fill one out in advance, they do not need to bring one
to the audition)
or
there will
be blank forms at the audition that they can fill out.
The audition class will consist of an improv warmup and then
individual performances
of
a prepared 1-1/2 minute solo. Please have the students
bring their music on a CD. There is no limit to the number of auditionees.
Dance on Film Screenings
We are very excited to announce that a screening of cutting
edge dance on film will be offered twice during our conference
so
that more of
you will be able to see it. We plan to present the work
by the London-based physical theatre group, DV8, THE
COST OF
LIVING (info below). We
also intend to screen a program of shorts of dance on
film from the 2007 Dance
on Film Festival which is presented by the
Dance Films Assoc.
The Cost of Living The Film
Stuck in a faded seaside town, street-performers David
and Eddie struggle to find work and romance. Their
story is told
through
dance and dialogue.
WINNER of twelve international film
awards, including a Rose d'Or and a Prix Italia AWARDS
Best of Festival Picture This Film Festival 2006, Calgary
Time Out Live Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance
2006, London
Prix Italia 2005, Milan
Rose d'Or 2005, Arts & Specials, Lucerne
Audience Choice Award
Festival of Dance Film for the Camera 2005, Brasilia
Jury Prize Dance on Camera Festival 2005, New York
Conceived and directed
by Lloyd Newson
35 min © DV8 Films Ltd 2004 The Cost of Living was
shot on location in Cromer on the Norfolk coast: a typical, old-fashioned
and faded
English
seaside resort.
The summer
season has petered to an end. An air of desertion hangs
over the town. Eddie and David are disillusioned street
performers.
Eddie
is tough,
confrontational and not afraid to defend his belief
in justice, respect and honesty. David is a dancer
who has
no legs (as
he is in real
life), watching him makes you reconsider accepted notions
of grace and perfection.
He is quietly determined not to let his disabilities
or society's prejudices get in his way. A series of
inter-linked scenes
show Eddie and David's
encounters with other people; some are incredibly hard-hitting,
others exhilarating because of their sheer physicality.
Student
Dance Party
A Student Dance Party will take place in the Zelazo
Orchestra Recital Hall from 9:30-11pm following the
Banquet on
Monday evening. It
will feature a DJ and is hosted by the Terpsichorean
People, UWM?s student
dance organization.
Site-Specific Imrpovisation Workshop
A site-specific Improvisation Workshop with our own
Simone Ferro will occur at the INOVA Art Gallery
in Vogel Hall
on Monday,
March 19, from
1-2:30pm. Those interested can meet at MIT 341
at 12:45pm.
Archival DVD Order Forms
We will be arranging archival DVD orders of individual
pieces from the 3 Adjudicated Concerts, the Informal
Concert and
the Gala Concert
to
be available to the choreographers of each piece
and to faculty representing those choreographers
ONLY.
These forms
will
be available at the Registration
Center upon your arrival, and orders are to be
placed through the box office after the start
of the conference.
These
DVD order forms
include
a release waiver that must be signed by the piece?s
choreographer or a faculty member representing
said choreographer.
NO DVD ORDERS WILL
BE TAKEN FOR OR FROM STUDENTS/DANCERS PERFORMING
IN THE PIECE, OR FOR ANY OTHER PIECES IN THE
CONCERTS. So if
you would
like to order,
please
make sure you get your choreographer?s permission
to
do so. Each DVD will contain ONE piece from ONE
concert. If
you
want to order
more
than one piece or one performance, you will be
charged for each additional DVD. The cost will
be $20.00
+ tax + $5 S/H
per DVD.
We will accept
cash,
check or credit card. Please allow 4-6 weeks
for delivery.

New Postings
First, an updated Overall Conference Schedule
will give you a better look at how the conference
in
general will
run.
Check it out online.
In addition, the Timetable of Classes offers
you a glimpse of
what a diverse and interesting array of classes
faculty from across
the region
and beyond will be offering. Many, many heartfelt
thanks go out to those of you who will volunteer
your time
and expertise by
teaching at our
conference. We really couldn?t do it without
you!
We ask that if you are teaching for
us, please check your scheduled class(es) and scheduled
tech time
for conflicts
that directly
affect you. PLEASE
CONTACT DARCI IMMEDIATELY if you discover
any direct conflicts. We will address direct
conflicts,
but
we really cannot
fix class, time
or day
preference issues. We know you understand.
Also new is the Participant Waiver Form.
We ask that you download, copy, have your
participants
sign them,
and FAX
(414.229.3335)
them back to
us by THURSDAY, FEB. 15, 2007. IMPORTANT:
a parent
or guardian?s signature is required if the
student is under
18 years
of age. All participants
in our conference must sign one of these
before he/she may receive registration materials
?
no exceptions.
We appreciate
your immediate
and speedy attention
to this matter.
Finally, there are Tech Schedules
and Concert Orders for each of Adjudication Concert I,
Adjudication Concert II,
Adjudication
Concert
III and the
Informal Concert now posted on the our website.
In order to accommodate everyone these schedules
must
be strictly
followed.
(see below)
Spacing/Tech and Concert Schedules
We are presenting three Adjudication Concerts,
which occur on Saturday, Sunday and Monday
of the conference.
Spacing/Tech
rehearsals
occur
during the day, and the Adjudication Concerts
begin after classes are finished.
Adjudicator Feedback Sessions for Adjudication
Concerts I and II will occur the morning
following each concert.
The
feedback
session
for
Adjudication Concert III on Monday will
occur immediately following the performance
and prior to the Banquet that same evening.
We have also arranged for an Informal Concert
Feedback
Forum,
lead
by our own Janet
Lilly and
faculty from other attending schools, to
occur Monday morning. We encourage everyone
to attend these feedback sessions if you
are
free.
There is rehearsal space signup available
for adjudication pieces when you arrive
to pick
up your registration
materials. Timeslots
available
Friday and Saturday are reserved for those
pieces adjudicating on Saturday. Timeslots
Saturday
afternoon and Sunday
are slated for
those adjudicating
Sunday, and timeslots Sunday afternoon
and Monday are reserved for those pieces
adjudicating
Monday.
Look
for the sign
up sheet when
you come
to check in for the conference.
If you are
participating in the adjudication concerts I encourage you to refer
to the
Adjudication Policies
posted
online.
It is best to
make sure prior to adjudication that
your piece(s) meet all the guidelines.
Classes
We have posted the preliminary
Timetable of Classes, which is subject
to change if
problems arise.
Classes will
be open on
a first come basis. Please remind your
students to attend classes at
the appropriate
technical level, and suggest that they
take class with faculty from other
institutions, thus allowing students
to sample each others? faculty?s classes.
Most
classes and events will occur on campus in Mitchell Hall, Zelazo Center
for the
Performing Arts, Theatre
Building, Music
Hall, Vogel
Hall and the Union, all in very close
proximity to each other. The Peck School
of the Arts? brand new Kenilworth Square
East complex
is about a mile south of the campus.
Because
walking to Kenilworth
is
not an
option
we want to advocate, and because parking
is a challenge, we have attempted to
schedule a variety
of classes
in these locations
with a 45 minute
lunch break so that people can take
a couple of classes on campus
and then take one at Kenilworth, or
vice versa.
Please see the Timetable of Classes
for details.
Adjudicators Master Classes
All 3 adjudicators master classes
will occur on Tuesday, March 20,
from 10:45am
-12:15pm.
They
are all on a
1st come basis.
This ensures
that
everyone has a fair chance to get
into one of the adjudicators master classes.
NOTE:
These
master
classes WILL NOT
conflict with the Gala
tech schedule. Please see the timetable
of classes for topic of master classes
and their locations.
Parking
Parking information is now posted.
Please check it out! Directions
and Maps
Maps of campus and the surrounding
area, as well as detailed directions
between
hotels, Alverno
College (where the
Stephen Petronio concert
is happening), Kenilworth Square
East and the
UWM campus
will be posted SOON. These postings
will constitute the final information
update on
the website. I will send you a
head?s up email when they are available.
Please contact us IMMEDIATELY if
you are planning to bring buses.
We will
need to
make special
arrangements well in
advance. If
you are,
make
sure to check with your hotel to
assure your ability to park there
as well.
After all these months
of emails and phone calls, we are really
looking forward to
meeting so many
of you
in person!
We hope
that your trip
to Milwaukee will be safe and enjoyable.
Sincerely,
