Milwaukee is home to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Milwaukee Ballet, the Florentine Opera Company, the Skylight Opera Theatre, the Milwaukee Choral Artists, Present Music, and Hal Leonard Corporation (the world's largest music publisher). Opportunities abound for qualified students in area performance venues and organizations, including a UWM apprenticeship program for singers with the Skylight Opera Theatre. UWM also is proud of its outstanding partnership with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, with several of its members teaching on campus as UWM performance studio faculty.

Several of the Music Department’s collaborations serve younger musicians: the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s ACE Program; Milwaukee Children’s Choir and Milwaukee Youth Chorale; the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra; and the String Academy of Wisconsin at UWM.

The Milwaukee Children’s Choir and The Milwaukee Youth Chorale
The mission of the Milwaukee Children's Choir is to give children exceptional choral music instruction and performance opportunities that foster creativity, personal expression and social growth. The Milwaukee Children's Choir makes a difference in the lives of children and the greater Milwaukee community by striving for continued excellence in choral music; achieving artistic prominence locally and beyond; cultivating diversity; reaching out to children in communities underserved by the arts; collaborating with other arts organizations; and by bringing recognition to Milwaukee and its arts community.

The Milwaukee Children's Choir, an organization of several choirs, provides a rich and rewarding experience for each child. The repertoire is varied and is drawn from the masters: Bach, Schubert, Britten, Vaughan-Williams, Kodály, and Copland, but also music from all cultures, including popular, folk and patriotic music. The Milwaukee Children's Choir is open to children of all races, religions and economic backgrounds. Financial assistance is available.

The success of the Milwaukee Children's Choir is dependent, in large part, on the support of music teachers and choral directors in the Milwaukee area. MCC singers should be leaders in their school music ensembles and are expected to be active participants in their school choir if one is available. An exception is made when the child must choose between the school's instrumental and vocal music programs.

Concepts taught include: the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, form, style); musical skills, including singing, theory, sight-reading, listening, and analysis; vocal development to the fullest potential through posture, breath, tone production and diction.

The Milwaukee Youth Chorale
Dr. Christopher W. Peterson, Director
Sharon Stosur, Accompanist

The Milwaukee Youth Chorale is for young men and women entering grades 9 through 12. The ensemble rehearses on the campus of UWM on Tuesday evenings in the Fine Arts Music Building room 280 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Singers have previous choral, vocal or musical experience and are selected on the basis of audition. The ensemble performs SATB literature of all types and emphasizes vocal development, music literacy and college preparatory music theory skills. The MYC will be a featured Demonstration Choir at the MENC National Convention in April 2004 in Minneapolis, MN. The group toured Italy in summer of 2004.

The Milwaukee Choral Artists
The Milwaukee Choral Artists was formed in 1998 by a group of committed and talented women professional singers from throughout the Milwaukee metropolitan area, whose goal is to present and promote choral and vocal music of the highest quality unsurpassed both in Milwaukee and abroad. Hailed for its imaginative programming, the group is establishing itself quickly in the mainstream of professional music making in Milwaukee, in the region, and nationally. A friend to contemporary choral music, the ensemble has performed world premieres of many of the country’s most esteemed living composers. Equally at home in early music, it appeared with the Boston Camerata on Early Music Now’s 2001-2002 15th Anniversary Season opening concert. The ensemble was in invited guest at the prestigious 2002 American Choral Director’s Association convention in Des Moines. The Milwaukee Choral Artists is featured on the recent Walton Music Company promotional CD, joined by other outstanding American professional choral ensembles. The ensemble performs three regular season concerts each year at historic venues throughout the Milwaukee area. It is the featured guest at UWM’s annual “Celebration of Women’s Voices”.
