Since their inception, the Youth Wind Ensembles have been active in concerts both on and off the university campus. UWM-YWE was chosen to perform for the Wisconsin State Legislature for the opening of "Music In Our Schools Week" (winter 1983); toured Britain and Europe (summer 1985) where they were the featured youth wind ensemble at the famed Glamorgan Music Festival held in Swansea, Wales; performed for the Wisconsin Convention of the National Band Association (1986); performed for the Wisconsin Music Educators Convention (1987, 1990, 1993); and toured Japan in summer 1988, where they were the only American youth wind ensemble featured in the Kummamoto World Music Festival and the Fourth Annual International Youth Musicale at Shizouka. In April 1989, UWM-YWE made its Carnegie Hall debut, performing on a Carnegie series. They have performed for the College Band Directors Association meetings in Minneapolis in February and June 1990, and for the 8th Biennial Convention of the National Band Association at Northwestern University as the featured demonstration group at a clinic given by their music director, Professor Thomas Dvorak. UWM-YWE has toured the continent of Europe seven additional times in 1985, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, and 2000. The tradition of international travel has continued with featured performances by both Youth Wind Ensembles I and II at the Cantando International Music Festival (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) in April 2004.

Auditions Spring 2008 Top
Auditions for the Youth Wind Ensembles are held in two stages. In the first round, students are auditioning for acceptance (or re-acceptance for returning members) into the program, and placement into one of the two Youth Wind Ensembles. In the late summer, students who have been assigned to Youth Wind Ensemble I and Youth Wind Ensemble II are called to a second round audition for their chair placement within their ensemble. Information on these chair auditions is sent out in mid-summer.
Students must be nominated for first round auditions by a school music or private lessons teacher no later than Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Only students who are endorsed by a teacher will be considered for audition.
