Bus Adm 747: Service Oriented Analysis and Design New information technologies can revolutionize the way in which users interact with information systems. Application development using these technologies often requires a paradigm shift from traditional development. This course examines the issues involved in assembling applications using a service oriented architecture framework. Agile methodologies for selecting and fabricating services to support rapidly changing processes are also covered, along with software quality assurance and metrics for the service oriented organization.
Bus Adm 748: Managing Information Technology Projects Successful development and implementation of IT projects, especially in light of poor track record, is vital to provide business value. This course focuses on examining the nine key knowledge areas of project management – project integration, scope, time, cost, quality, risk, human resource, communication, and procurement management within the context of IT projects. Project management process groups and process activities – initiation, planning, executing, controlling and closing projects will be discussed. Develop a robust understanding of how contemporary project management techniques (e.g., Work Breakdown Structures, Earned Value Analysis, Network Diagrams, Critical Path and Pert Analysis, Critical Chain Scheduling) and tools (e.g., Microsoft Project 2007) are used to manage IT projects. Various software effort and cost estimation models, quality tools and metrics will be applied. Students working in teams will apply these techniques/tools in developing a real-world prototype IT application.
Bus Adm 749: Advanced Data and Information Management Managing data in an enterprise is one of the most critical issues. In the last decade the variety and quality of available data in enterprise has exploded. The volume of semi structured and unstructured data such as e-mails, messages, business documents, reports, pictures, voice and videos far exceeds the structured tabular data. This course focuses on advanced data representation, management and reporting techniques. Issues related to data quality, integrity and integration will be addressed. The course will also address data administration and governance issues.
Bus Adm 810: Development of Web-Based SolutionsOnline presence is now a common business model in almost all economic activities and industry sectors. Consumers judge the viability of businesses based on the quality and performance of their websites. Taking lead in designing and developing the most suitable web-based solutions requires an in-depth understanding of the available tools, methodologies and strategies. This course covers the current tools and technologies such as web services, mobile applications, server-side and client-side applications, database driven web applications, and Web 2.0 technologies, as well as methodologies such as content management and semantic web. The course project involves students designing and implementing a database driven eBusiness website.
Electives Bus Adm 741: Web Mining and Analytics The increasing volume of business data, particularly web-based data captured as customers click through web pages, and the capability to store such data have created new opportunities to use analytical methods to discover new knowledge. This course covers the measurement methods and analytical approaches in mining data and texts with the goal of discovering new knowledge and insights. Such knowledge assists in developing business strategies, enhancing customer relationship management, and improving business practices. The business data could be quantitative (numerical) or qualitative (text). Web-based data includes click streams and page visits among many such measures. Textual data includes business texts and information available on web pages. The course takes a strategic approach while providing technical depth for leadership in analytics initiatives. It covers measurement methods and analytical approaches for data analysis. Approaches for integrating web and business data for customer relationship management are discussed. The topics include tools and technologies needed to accomplish the business objectives of data mining and text mining.
Bus Adm 743: Information Privacy, Security & Continuity As the demand for ubiquitous access to information systems grows, coupled with increasingly globalized networked firms, the security threats to an organization’s information assets increases many-fold. Corporations collect increasing amount of data on individuals, increasing the risk of unwanted disclosures and the need to safeguard individuals’ privacy. This course examines the issues associated with information privacy and security, and addresses mechanisms for managing and governing IT security and information privacy. An assessment of security risks and countermeasures, along with compliance in an increasingly regulated information society are also addressed.

Bus Adm 811: Process and Workflow Management Business processes have become a center piece for achieving operational excellence of an organization. IT professional plays a critical role in modeling, designing and optimizing business processes. This course focuses on the advanced techniques for these. It also covers process re-engineering and continuous process improvement. Issues related to integration of processes within and across organizations will be discussed. Techniques for implementing processes using web services and SAP will be covered.
Bus Adm 812: Emerging Information Technologies for Business The dynamic nature of information technology necessitates the constant evaluation of new, emerging information technologies potentially capable of enhancing business operations. This course introduces several novel information technologies. Topics encompass emerging tools and technologies for business, including rich Internet applications, mobile platforms and applications, intelligent systems for monitoring and tracking real-time activity, and new computing paradigms. The course will provide in depth exposure to various emerging technologies, focusing on their important characteristics, key benefits, and potential pitfalls. Emphasis is placed on methods for assessing the viability and impact of these technologies in different business settings. Furthermore, the management of emerging technologies, as well as their integration with existing information technology is discussed.
Bus Adm 814: Enterprise Knowledge and Semantic Management Enterprise knowledge and knowledge workers are the backbone of organizational success and survival in the global economy. With the exponential growth of business knowledge, it is critical for organizations to capture, organize, store, and share valuable knowledge, to manage collaboration among knowledge workers, and to develop organization ontology and standards in order to leverage the organization’s knowledge assets and to promote organizational learning. This course covers knowledge and semantic management with a managerial perspective, while providing technical depth for the methods, tools, and standards needed for leadership in enterprise knowledge management and semantic initiatives. The course covers the value of knowledge management and its economic impacts, and discusses viable approaches in acquisition, repository creation, and dissemination of knowledge across the organization. The topics also include enterprise ontology, development tools and standards for capturing and encoding knowledge, collaboration management and e-collaboration, as well as developing intelligent agents and recommendation systems.
Bus Adm 816: Business Intelligence Technologies and SolutionsIn this course, students will learn how to develop business intelligence (BI) solutions using technologies such as data warehousing. The course covers the different data warehouse development activities, as well as various data mining techniques for data analysis. Students will use the SAP BW tool for implementing BI solutions.
Bus Adm 817: Infrastructure for Information Systems The objectives of this course are to provide an overview of the computing and network infrastructure required for a modern organization. The course focuses on the process of designing and developing the corporate technology infrastructure. Business requirements related to standards, reliability, security and performance are addressed. Students will become familiar with the networking technology, structure and architecture of Internet, servers, server farms, virtualization, and cloud computing. Concepts like middle ware, web services, service oriented architecture and real time enterprises will be discussed.
Bus Adm 818: Information Systems Practicum The objective of this practicum course is to provide a team of students with a task that requires the integration and application of the skills they have developed in the program. The real live problem to be addressed will be selected from a local area company. The student team will be responsible for developing their own structure and working with the client to define the problem to be addressed. The team will then be responsible for the design and implementation of a prototype solution, while working closely with the client. The practicum course should be taken toward the end of the program.
Bus Mgmt 732: Enterprise Resource PlanningIn today’s cutting edge business world, enterprise resource planning (ERP) software plays a critical role. By bringing together a company’s many different functions into a single integrated system, an abundance of opportunities for growth and increased productivity is created. This course examines enterprise resource software in general and discusses how ERP can improve the overall operation of a company, how it can be used to streamline operations, and how the data from the various functional areas of the organization are interrelated. The course will explain how the fundamental business processes interact with SAP ERP in the functional areas of Sales and Distribution, Materials Management, Production Planning, Financial Accounting, Controlling, and Human Capital Management. In addition, students will be exposed to developing Internet applications which provide access to the SAP data.
Bus Mgmt 733: Enterprise Simulation Game The ERP Simulation game is an innovative "learning-by-doing" approach to teaching ERP concepts. During this game, students have to run a business with a real-life ERP system (SAP®). Groups of five to six students each operate a firm in a made-to-stock manufacturing supply chain. This requires interaction with suppliers and customers by sending and receiving orders, delivering their products and completing the whole cash-to-cash cycle. A simulation software program was developed to automate the sales process, so that every firm receives a large number of orders in each quarter of the simulation. Using standard reports of the ERP, students analyzes these transactions and make business decisions to ensure the profitability of their operations. The pedagogical objectives of this game are threefold: to develop a hands-on understanding of the concepts underlying enterprise systems; to experience the benefits of enterprise integration firsthand; and to develop technical skill at using ERP software.
