Mark Mone was named Interim Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents on April 22, 2014.
A Professor of Management in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Lubar School of Business, Dr. Mone also has been serving UWM as the Chancellor’s Designee for Strategic Planning and Campus Climate. In his cabinet-level role as chancellor’s designee, Dr. Mone works with the campus’ senior leadership, governance groups, and all stakeholders to develop UWM’s 2020 strategic plan, and develop and implement campus-level programs to improve the organizational climate. Dr. Mone has been on the UWM faculty since 1989, serving for more than 15 years as the Associate Dean for Executive Education & Business Engagement. His responsibilities involved external relations for the School, including partnerships with business, medical, legal, government, and not-for profit organizations. Dr. Mone was responsible for the Executive MBA program, the longest running program of its kind in Wisconsin, Career Services, and other financial and marketing functions.
Dr. Mone has taught courses in managing people, team building and communication; behavioral research methods; and human resource management. His executive workshops address Leading and Managing Change, Organizational Innovation, Strategic Planning and Execution, Executive Succession Planning, Organizational Culture, Performance Management, Leadership Development, Team Building, and International HR issues. Mark’s executive and management learning programs are with leading firms that include the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Johnson Controls, Rockwell Automation, Kohler Company, UW System President’s Cabinet, Staff and Chancellors, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Platteville, We Energies, Kohl’s, Manpower, Fiserv, Medical College of Wisconsin, MillerCoors, Ingersoll-Rand, Regal-Beloit Corporation, the Young Presidents’ Organization, and others.
Prior to joining the Lubar School of Business in 1989, Mark taught Organizational Behavior and Strategic Management in the College of Business and Economics for five years at Washington State University. He also taught at HotelConsult in Le Bouveret, Switzerland, and regularly leads Executive MBA students on international residencies. While at Washington State University, Mark received the Alumni Association's Award for outstanding teaching. More recently, he won both the UW-Milwaukee School of Business Administration Advisory Board's Annual Award for Teaching Excellence and the Advisory Board’s Izzet Sahin Annual Research Award.
Mark's industry background includes more than 10 years' management experience in the hospitality and food service industry. For many of those years, he opened and managed hotels in various cities in the western United States. His primary responsibilities involved operations, staffing, and training and development. Mark's educational background includes a B.S. in Management from Central Washington University, an M.B.A. from Idaho State University, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Organization Theory from Washington State University. His research interests include goal setting, self-efficacy, feedback, reward systems, organizational downsizing, decline, turnaround, and research methods. He has published more than 35 articles or book chapters in scholarly and applied journals and books.
