Diagnostic Medical Sonography Submajor
Students accepted into the professional training component complete the junior and senior years at one of the clinical affiliate professional training sites off campus. The professional training is time intensive, requiring students to commit to a 40+ hour week. Entry into professional training is competitive and dependent upon:
- completion of UWM's General Education Requirements (GER),
- completion of all required courses and electives in the freshman and sophomore semesters by May prior to the following fall start of the professional training,
- a cumulative UWM minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.
Additional requirements vary by clinical training site and program. Students should meet with their academic advisor for more detailed information related to progression into the professional training. To schedule with the advisor, call (414) 229-2758.
Prior to each fall semester, UWM Radiologic Technology and Sonography Program Directors will announce the date of the annual September mandatory meeting for students ready to apply to the 2-yr professional training. Students are responsible for checking their UWM email or confirming with their advisor the date, time, and location of the annual September mandatory meeting to ensure receipt of the most current application information.
In addition to attending the September mandatory meeting, students must complete the following steps in the application process:
- Complete the UWM College of Health Sciences Diagnostic Medical Sonography application form (General Sonography or Echocardiography) and submit it along with your autobiographical statement and 3 letters of recommendation to Northwest Quadrant, Building B, 6th floor by November 1.
- The autobiographical statement should describe yourself and your accomplishments; address your work experience including any within health care; state your reasons for choosing Diagnostic Medical Sonography as your profession and your future goals. Keep text to one page, double-spaced, and typed on standard 8.5 x 11 paper.
- Contact the three references to request a form letter of recommendation. References may employers, teachers, TA's clergy, or other qualified individuals, excluding relatives and friends. Recommendation letters should be completed by the recommender, placed in a sealed envelope, signed with their name over the seal, and returned to the applicant. Applicants should submit the 3 sealed letters along with the other application materials.
Review Of Applicants
The College of Health Sciences Student Affairs Office and the BMS Education Coordinator will review all application materials and transcripts on each applicant to verify that the admission criteria have been satisfied. The completed application materials, letters of recommendation, and a copy of each applicant's high school and college transcripts will be forwarded to the Program Directors at the clinical training sites.
Interviews with Affiliate Sites
The hospital Program Directors (Aurora and UWHC) will review the application materials and contact applicants to set up an interview. The college Program Directors (UWM) will review the application materials and contact applicants to set up an interview.
The affiliate sites (Aurora and UWHC) will make the final decisions on placements and will notify applicants by mail. Eligibility is conditional; that is, the students must complete the required course work and maintain a minimum UWM cumulative GPA of 3.0. Student Handbooks are provided for your convenience and reference during orientation at the professional clinical training site.
Schedule an appointment through the College of Health Sciences Student Affairs Office (414) 229-2758 to meet with your advisor to review your transcripts and complete a degree audit to ensure that your academic records are in order.
A Background Check and a physical examination are required on all students prior to the start of the professional training. Drug screens may also be requested by the clinical affiliate site. Health Status Assessment forms should be submitted to the BMS Program office, Enderis 411.
Students are required to carry Health insurance while in professional training.
High School and UWM transcripts will be forwarded to the affiliate site(s).
Book fees for the clinical training will cost approximately $950.
Limited employment is recommended during the professional training.
Rotation schedules, vacations, and other time off are matters which are decided individually by each clinical program (Aurora, UWHC, UWM). The University academic calendar does not apply.
Students are expected to register for classes at UWM in the usual fashion at the beginning of the Summer, Fall, and Spring semesters of the senior year. University fees will be charged.
Essential functions represent the essential non-academic requirements that all students must master to successfully participate in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography professional training and become employable.
Must have the ability to organize and accurately perform the individual steps of the ultrasound examination in proper sequence.
Are expected to examine patients who may have communicable diseases and/or other health problems.
Must have the capability to be independently mobile.
Must have the hearing and visual acuity sufficient to perform ultrasound examinations, observe patients, read monitors, and document and hear equipment alarms.
Must have ability to:
- Transport patients from wheel chairs and patient carts to an examination table (to lift more than 50 pounds routinely).
- Sit/stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Work with arms routinely.
- Push and pull routinely.
- Kneel and squat routinely.
- Work within a limited space.
- Transport mobile ultrasound equipment to patient rooms, operating rooms, and research laboratories.
