Doctoral Degrees

Welcome

UWM’s College of Health Sciences offers two doctoral degrees: the interdisciplinary/interdepartmental Ph.D. Health Sciences, and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) offered through the Department of Human Movement Sciences.
As a doctoral student at CHS, you'll work alongside a faculty of esteemed scholars. They are active researchers who have been successful in competing for state and federal grants in excess of $9 million over the past 15 years. Fourteen have won teaching awards, seven have won graduate school research grants, and two are Fulbright Scholars. The Carnegie Foundation classifies UW-Milwaukee as a Doctoral – High Research Activity institution.

Our faculty and staff represent a number of different social and natural science backgrounds including biology, chemistry, philosophy, physics, physiology, psychology, and sociology as well as a number of health science disciplines and professions including Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Care Administration and Informatics, Human Movement Sciences, and Occupational Therapy.

Basic and applied research, informed by positivistic and naturalistic philosophical and methodological approaches, is conducted with humans and non-human animal models. The broad range of health-related research varies from work in illness and disease prevention to rehabilitation and assistive technology. Research efforts are especially focused on underserved and at risk-populations including children, older adults, various racial/ethnic groups, and people with disabilities.
