Health Sciences - Diagnostic Medical Sonography

Program Overview

Radiologic Technology student performing diagnostic imaging techniques with instructor The College of Health Sciences announces the addition of a Bachelor of Science degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography following recent approval of an affiliation with the UW Hospital and Clinics (UWHC) in Madison, Wisconsin. Diagnostic Medical Sonography is offered by the CHS' Department of Health Sciences as one of six submajors in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) degree program. As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you'll use high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body. This type of procedure is often referred to as sonography, a sonogram, or an ultrasound scan. You will produce quality medical images of the human body to aid the physician in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of disease.

This is a four-year baccalaureate program in which students complete 4 or more semesters of preclinical course work to prepare for the 2-year clinical training. UWHC will begin accepting eligible students into the clinical training beginning with the fall semester of 2007. Applicants choose between two clinical tracks: General Sonography and Echocardiography. Clinical courses are completed on site at UWHC in Madison; therefore, accepted applicants must be willing to relocate. Upon completion of this degree and professional certification, students enter the field to perform examinations and provide images using diagnostic ultrasound or high frequency sound waves.
