Program Overview

Clinical Laboratory Sciences students observing bacteria culture plate with instructor

Public Health Microbiology is offered by the CHS' Department of Health Sciences as one of six submajors in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) degree program. As a Public Health Microbiologist, you'll investigate the fascinating world of organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye. Using a microscope, you'll study living organisms and infectious agents and how they affect our lives, including those agents that pose a threat to public health. Microbiologists collaborate with other scientists and work in almost every industry, from food to veterinary medicine to space research.

When you successfully complete the pre-professional criteria, you will be eligible for an clinical training at the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Upon graduation, you will also be eligible for professional certification through the respective national accrediting organizations.
