Human Movement Sciences - Kinesiology

Program Overview

Kinesiology Program (Including emphasis in Pre-Physical Therapy)

M.S. Kinesiology Student Participant in biomechanics research study

The Kinesiology program is offered by CHS' Department of Human Movement Sciences (HMS). As a student in the Kinesiology submajor, you'll work with an advisor to choose an educational focus that prepares you for graduate school. One such example is that of the Pre-Physical Therapy track within the Kinesiology submajor. Students satisfactorily completing this educational track will have met the necessary requirements to apply to most of the graduate physical therapy programs in the country. Other career choices include traditional medicine, chiropractic medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, and sport sociology.

UWM's Kinesiology - Pre-Physical Therapy graduates also benefit from the department's unique PT Pathways Program. Area colleges have partnered with the Department of Human Movement Sciences to hold open a number of admission slots in their graduate PT programs for qualified UWM Kinesiology - Pre-PT graduates.

Kinesiology is one of four undergraduate submajors offered by HMS, where nearly 80% of our graduates (Kinesiology submajor) over the past five years have received admission to either their first or second choice of graduate schools. This may be attributed to a number of factors including a solid, well-rounded educational foundation, early advising efforts to insure students select courses which optimize educational opportunities, and a strong, supportive faculty who afford students opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills through opportunities in laboratory and research centers. Among our faculty are past and present Fulbright Scholars, presidents and fellows of international and national academic organizations, award-winning teachers, and NIH funded researchers, all of them committed to providing the highest quality educational experience.
