My work is focused on measuring, evaluating, and improving accessibility, usability and universal design in the world around us, especially related to products and environments for people with disabilities. My background is in biomechanics and rehabilitation sciences, which is integrated with human factors, accessibility and universal design training and research interests that began at NCSU and the Center for Universal Design. My biomedical and rehabilitation research skills and interests were further developed during graduate school at our neighboring Marquette University. With the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Medical Instrumentation, I investigated and helped develop different tools for assessing the accessibility of medical instrumentation, for both patients and providers with disabilities. I also worked with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation's Human Factors Committee to author an ANSI/AAMI standard, “HE-75: Human factors engineering - Design of medical devices”. This includes a chapter specific to "Accessibility Considerations", which is helping to drive system level changes to improve the accessibility of health care in the United States under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and Establishment of Standards for Accessible Medical Diagnostic Equipment. Ultimately, it is my career passion to continue to help design safer, more usable and accessible technologies for everyone, including people with disabilities.
