Interests & Expertise

Lisa Cottingham has been a member of the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders since 1991 and was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in 2001. During her tenure she has worked extensively in the on-campus UWM Speech & Language Clinic, supervising students engaged in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of communication disorders. She has also taught numerous courses for the Department and College at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2007 she assumed a new role within the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders, spending all of her time on campus teaching courses to undergraduate and/or graduate students. She has been awarded the College of Health Sciences Byoung Kim Award for Teaching Excellence and was recognized by the University in 2011 for being one of the professors most frequently named by UWM students as most helpful to them during their first year on campus.

Prof. Cottingham’s long-time interest has been in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of fluency disorders (e.g., stuttering) in children and adults. She has been an invited speaker and has served as a consultant on these topics throughout the community. She also exhibits interest and expertise in the wide variety of communication disorders affecting the pediatric population, including articulation, phonological and child language disorders.
