Workload Model - Faculty

Introduction

Faculty are of four generic types given deployment:

  1. Teaching faculty with minimal research/scholarship activity.
  2. Teaching faculty with active research/scholarship activity.
  3. Teaching faculty with active research/scholarship activity and thesis supervision.
  4. Teaching faculty with minimal research/scholarship activity and thesis supervision.

Criteria for research/scholarship activity and thesis supervision

Research/scholarship activity.

To receive workload allocations, faculty should (for a given year) produce at least:

Category 1 - Publications
  1. a lead-authored paper submitted to a refereed journal, or
  2. two second-authored papers submitted to refereed journals, or
  3. a book (in progress, could be over several years), or

Category 2 - Grants/ Service or Equipment Contracts
  1. one major new grant (or substantially re-written grant) submission, or
  2. two minor grants, grant re-submissions, or service/equipment contract submissions, or

Category 3 - Presentations of Scholarly Papers
  1. two research-based, refereed presentations at regional/national/international meetings (any combination of two), or

Category 4 - Editorships/Substantial Research Reviewing
  1. an editorship of a recognized research journal, or
  2. substantial reviewing of research articles for research journals.

Workload allocations will be annually determined by the Chairperson and Executive Committee based on the extent of involvement (3-6 units of load/year may be allocated, precluding research buyouts). Should a faculty member not produce at least one of the listed items during the year for which workload allocations were given and based on Executive Committee workload review, that faculty member's teaching workload may be increased the following year. The intent of workload release for research/scholarship activity is to support effort that yields one or more of the above listed outcomes.

Thesis supervision. To receive a workload allocation of one to six (1 -6) units of load, faculty must (for a given year) be directly involved with the supervision of graduate students pursuing the MS degree in Kinesiology. Each spring, the Graduate Coordinator and Chairperson will determine who is active in supervision. The Chairperson will incorporate these allocation recommendations into workload deployments for presentation to the Executive Committee.

Each Spring after annual reviews, the Executive Committee will receive workload deployments from the Chairperson for the following year. The Committee will affirm (with needed modification or as is) the Chair's recommendations, Both the Undergraduate and Graduate Program Coordinators will be expected to work with the Chairperson to develop annual workloads.

WORKLOAD UNIT ALLOCATIONS

An annual fulltime load is 24 units. Units are assigned using this model:

Instruction (units are for one semester or equivalent length courses):
  • Lecture: 1 contact hour = 1 unit of load
  • Lab/Discussion/Activity Courses: 1 contact hour = .75 unit of load
  • Undergrad Field Experience Courses: 2-3 units of load (depends upon number of students in course)
  • Courses with more than 45 students (assumes course is taught completely by the instructor/no TA support):
    • 46-60 students: 1 contact hour = 1.5 units of load
    • 60 + students: 1 contact hour = 2 units of load
    • Undergraduate courses with less than 12 students may be adjusted to fewer units of load after review

Administration (units are for one academic year)
  • Chairperson: 12 units of load
  • Graduate Program Coordinator: 6 units of load

Research/Scholarship (units are for one academic year):
  • 3-6 units of load
  • 5-6 units of load (active in 3 of the 4 research/scholarship categories)
  • 4-5 units of load (active in 2 of the 4 research/scholarship categories)
  • 3-4 units of load (active in 1 of the 4 research/scholarship categories)
  • (Note: higher number in range is assigned if a category item involves more extensive activity; e.g., a major vs. a minor grant submission.)


Thesis supervision (units are for one academic year): 1-6 units of load
  • To be annually determined by the Graduate Coordinator and Chairperson; Executive Committee confirmation presumed.

Service (units are for one academic year): 1.5 units of load (Note: individuals with substantial service commitments for which no buyouts are given may request the Executive Committee to consider increasing the units allocated for service.)
