Highlighting a CSD Graduate Student: Meet Rena Pitlik

- CSD graduate student, Rena Pitlik, and her fourth grade Tanzanian students.
Rena Pitlik, a CSD graduate student, describes in her own words how she spent her summer vacation.
“I wanted to travel the summer after graduating from UW-Madison and prior to entering graduate studies in Communication Sciences and Disorders at UWM. I researched and discovered an international volunteer program called Cross-Cultural Solutions and chose Tanzania, a country on Africa’s east coast.
Much to my surprise, on my first day, I was assigned my own fourth grade classroom! Each morning for the next two months I would be teaching the children any subject matter I would like. Although my first reaction was one of sheer terror, I grew to genuinely love my students and I grew confident in my teaching role. The experience was one I would never trade, and I look forward to returning to Tanzania as soon as time (and money!) allow…as a speech-language pathologist…or volunteer!”
