Programming for Elementary School Students

The Health Sciences Academy is designed for Milwaukee area students who are currently in the 5th or 6th grade. These students are eligible to participate in an innovative weeklong health sciences enrichment program. The goal of the program is to foster an opportunity for students to gain exposure to the world of health care professions by exploring science and mathematics. Students work in clinical laboratory settings and observe the day-to-day operations of health care professionals. The schedule is comprehensive inclusive of academic skill building exercises and enrichment activities. Students gain insight about college life and the necessary preparation to ensure success in their pursuit of higher education.
SAMPLE of ACTIVITIES: (Students are picked up beginning at 7:30 a.m. and arrive home by 1:30 p.m.)
Monday: Spend the day at the Museum Center and explore science activities. Students visit the Butterfly Pavilion and attend a show at the Humphrey Imax Dome Theater. Pizza is on the menu! After lunch, visit Discovery World's Exhibit Floor.
Tuesday: Marquette University's Dental School is the place to learn all about how to care for teeth and learn about dental careers. Students also work in the laboratories learning to make impressions. Students may even get to see a cadaver!
Wednesday: Students work with the College of Health Sciences' Athletic Trainers. The hands on activities include, learning how to take care of sports related injuries. Enjoy a tour of the Klotsche Center (gym) and learn to use exercise equipment.
Thursday: Visit the Medical College of Wisconsin's Center for Science Education. Students participate in laboratories on a variety of experiments and activities emphasizing hypotheses-based problem solving and inquiry-based scientific exploration.
Friday: Is breakfast and on to Cool Waters in Greenfield Park. The day begins with participating in hands on observation of various science techniques. Explore the park to come up with your findings. From 10:00 a.m. until noon it is all fun and games at Cool Waters!
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Student must be a highly motivated underrepresented 5th or 6th grader from the Milwaukee area
- have good attendance
- have teacher recommendation
- complete the application process

COST
The Program is Free to students through a Scholarship Program made available by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
