HCOP Pre-College Health Sciences Saturday Academy

The HCOP SATURDAY ACADEMY students meet for 20 sessions, this exciting non-credit comprehensive academic program provides preliminary academic and enrichment activities for rising high school juniors and seniors who are planning to pursue a health career and attend UWM or other colleges/universities. Students are involved in hands-on health sciences education activities that focus on anatomy and physiology, physical/occupational therapy, laboratory sciences, communication disorders and scientific research.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Must be a US citizen or permanent resident that meets the criteria of a disadvantaged family.
- Must be current high school 10th or 11th grade student
- Minimum GPA of 2.5, with a strong science and math background
- Have successfully completed courses in mathematics, English and biology
- Complete the application process
COST
The program is free, books materials and supplies are provided.
STIPEND
Students may receive a stipend for participation based on eligibility requirements and program funding. This application will determine your eligibility for the review course and the stipend. Once eligibility is determined, a copy of parental/participant's tax statements will be required. Stipends will be issued after satisfactory completion of the program.

HCOP Pre-College Health Sciences Institute (PHSI)
The HCOP Pre-college Health Sciences Institute (PHSI) is a six-week, non-credit comprehensive program that provides preliminary academic and enrichment activities for rising high school juniors and seniors who are planning to pursue a health career and attend UWM or other colleges and universities. The goal of the Institute is to motivate students to pursue a health career and to attend a college or university. The Institute is designed to enhance academic performance and provide enrichment activities. PHSI students participate in exciting health educational activities, field trips and classes that focus on the following:
- Health Sciences
- Laboratory Research
- Faculty Mentoring Experiences
- Writing and Communications

MEDAL
MEDAL (an acronym for Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, Architecture, and Law) is a series of career workshops designed especially for motivated high school underrepresented students interested in pursuing a career in any of these five professions. Each exciting workshop is hosted at the site of a participating college or university and is conducted by experienced professionals and college students majoring in these fields. There are five consecutive Saturday sessions in the series. A Parents' Workshop, held during the Kick-Off Session, will provide parents with important information about pre-college programs, college admission procedures and applying for college financial aid. MEDAL is a joint project sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Marquette University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Public Schools and the Milwaukee Area Health Education Center.
SELECTION CRITERIA
- Interested in attending college and pursuing a career in Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, Architecture or Law
- Must receive free or reduced lunch
- Be recommended by teacher or counselor
- Have a minimum 2.0 Cumulative GPA
- Complete the application process
COST
The Program is free to students through a Scholarship Program made available by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and contributions from sponsoring institutions or agencies.
