Other Tests Offered at UWM


American College Testing (ACT) Residual This college entrance exam is used to determine admission to the university. The residual ACT is taken in the UWM Testing Center and the scores may only be used at UWM. The length of the test is 3 3/4 hours. There is a $45.00 fee, which must be paid at the time of testing. The residual ACT is offered the second Monday of every month at 4:00 pm. and Tuesdays at 12:30 pm. You must wait 60 days before retesting or your scores will be invalid. An appointment is required. Graphing calculators are allowed.

Challenge Exams
Challenge exams are offered through some departments and serve to exempt a student from specific department prerequisites. A passing grade on these exams demonstrates that the student's proficiency is equivalent to certain courses. You must call the Testing Center to schedule an appointment.

College of Health Sciences administers their own challenge exams offering students the opportunity to test out of the following courses:
CLS 427 Clinical Immunology
CLS 431 Clinical Chemistry  
CLS 521 Applied Clinical Hematology
CLS 522 Homeostasis
CLS 534 Medical Microbiology
CLS 537 Medical Parasitology and Mycology
CLS 542 Applied Clinical Chemistry

In the Department of Biology, if a student is referred by a faculty member he or she can test out of two different courses by taking the following exams:
BIO 101
BIO 203
No credit is granted.
These tests are administered at the UWM Testing Center and scored by testing staff. Key was provided by department. Scores are emailed to referring professor.

UWM Correspondence Testing

Policy for Consortium Correspondence Testing

Correspondence test materials must be sent directly to the UWM Testing Center (please use the address listed top left of this page).

Once the request for proctoring services has been approved, the candidate will receive notification to schedule an appointment. Candidates who miss two appointments will need to pay a non-refundable fee of $10.00 prior to rescheduling. Once the fee has been received in the Testing Center, the candidate may schedule another appointment.


English as a Second Language - Placement in Composition Test (ESL-PIC) English as a Second Language - Placement in Composition Test (ESL-PIC)

If you grew up speaking a language other than English, you should take this test. As an ESL (English as a Second Language) writer, you can complete your English requirement by taking ESL writing courses instead of the English writing courses designed for native speakers of English. The ESL writing courses can also help you do better in all of your university courses. This test lasts 75 minutes and is offered on Tuesdays at 9:30am and Wednesdays at 2:00pm. An appointment is required. Dictionaries are optional. The UWM Testing Center does not provide dictionaries.

Note: The ESL PIC test is only offered at UW-Milwaukee and is not available at Regional Placement Testing.


MAT (Miller Analogies Test)
The MAT (Miller Analogies Test) test is a series of analogies designed to measure a person's reasoning ability. It is an entrance requirement for some graduate programs. This is a computer-based test. You will receive an unofficial copy of your score report for the computer based test at the conclusion of testing. Scores are mailed to your home and the institution(s) designated within 10-14 business days. The fee for this test is $75.00 and must be paid at the time of the exam. If a candidate retests within 12 months of the first test, a retest ticket issued by MAT must be presented at the time of testing. An appointment is required to take this test.
