Observing System

The School of Freshwater Sciences operates a network of buoy-based sensors that collect physical, chemical, and biological data about Lake Michigan. Known as the Great Lakes Urban Coastal Observing System, or GLUCOS, the network consists of two types of buoys that are generally deployed in Milwaukee-area coastal waters. GLUCOS' large, solar-powered Endurance buoys are deployed at fixed locations for up to a year to obtain long-term data. GLUCOS' smaller, battery-powered Pioneer buoys are deployed for two months or less and are easily moved to support changing data collection needs.
