Common Questions
What materials do I need to submit with my application? If you have attended school at another campus in your absence from UWM, you will need to submit official transcripts with your grades posted. If courses at another institution are currently in progress, please note the course number and title on your application.

What if I am not sure of the exact dates I attended UWM? What do I put on the application? If you are not sure of the exact dates you attended UWM, please put down approximate dates. Also, please be sure to note any prior names you have used.

When will a decision be made on my application?Once an application file is complete, you may expect a decision in approximately 6-8 weeks.

How do I reach my advisor?Advisors help you with course selection, registration, degree requirements, and other questions you may have. Please view the 'After You Are Admitted' page for information.

What if my advisor admitted me, do I still have to go through the Department of Enrollment Services?Your advisor can only give you the "ok" to go forward with the admission process. You must still complete an application and submit official transcripts if you attended another school. The Department of Enrollment Services will review your application file to determine if you are admissible.

If I am reentering UWM with outside college work, when will I know how it transfers?Once you are admitted, an official credit evaluation will be mailed out in approximately 4-6 weeks. Because UWM is the largest recipient of transfer students in Wisconsin, we are unable to provide a credit evaluation before you are admitted. However, if you attended a UW System school or a Wisconsin Technical College, you can use the Transfer Information System (TIS) to see how your credits transfer before you receive your official credit evaluation from UWM.

How do classes transfer to UWM?UWM grants transfer credit from regionally accredited 2-year and 4-year institutions. UWM also grants college credit for Advanced Placement (AP) exams and International Baccalaureate exams (IB) provided the scores meet minimum requirements and are reported on official score reports. UWM grants credit for several College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams.

How is my GPA impacted by returning to UWM? If you are returning to UWM and have not previously earned your bachelor’s degree, your cumulative GPA will continue from your last point of enrollment. If you have previously earned your bachelor’s degree, you should apply as a ‘Second Degree’ student. Your credits and GPA will start over with the courses you take upon your return and your original record cannot be altered.

NOTE: Grades associated with courses earned at other institutions are not factored into your UWM GPA.

What if I gave my transcript to my advisor? The Department of Enrollment Services will need an official transcript to complete your application file. Either you can submit another official transcript to Enrollment Services or you can request that your advisor send the official transcript.

Is there a deadline for my application?Yes. UWM started an application deadline several years ago, so this may be new to you. For most UWM schools and colleges, if you want to start in the fall, the deadline is July 1. If you are thinking about coming to school in the spring, the deadline is December 1. Some schools and colleges have their own earlier deadlines.
