Orange Marker Fraudulent Tax Returns (3/20/2015)

Over the last several years, the UW Service Center has received feedback from employees, or on behalf of employees, that some person has fraudulently filed a tax return using their personal information.

The fraudulent tax returns are filed using information that was not obtained as part of a data breach. Rather, the data is randomly generated and then the fraudulent tax returns are filed electronically requesting refunds as a part of the scheme.

The IRS has compiled resources for individuals who may find themselves in this situation, and can be found via the following link.

Orange Marker Anthem Blue Cross Identity Theft Phishing Scam (2/13/2015)

Con artists have seized on this week's massive hack of Anthem, as an opportunity to perpetrate phishing scams.

Several reputable sources have confirmed that past and present Anthem customers have received phishing emails that purport to be from the company. These emails promise a free credit monitoring service, and encourage recipients to click on a link in the email to enable a free year of credit card protection.

Anthem has confirmed that while it will be offering free credit monitoring and ID protection services, it has not yet sent out any such emails. Anthem has stated that it will contact current and former members via mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service about the cyber attack with specific information on how to enroll in the monitoring services.

UW-System employees should beware of contact purportedly from Anthem by phone, email, text, or social media. These are clearly illegitimate and seek to obtain sensitive information for nefarious purposes. We are currently not aware of any increased risk to the UW-System population. Your status as a UW-System employee does not subject you to an increased or decreased risk of being impacted by this threat, relative to the general population.

This information is being provided to encourage increased awareness of this specific scam, as well as phishing scams in general.

Please review the following tips and suggestions to avoid being victimized:

  • Do not click on any links in email.
  • Do not reply to the email or reach out to the senders in any way.
  • Do not supply any information on the website that may open, if you have clicked on a link in an email.
  • Do not open any attachments that arrive with email.
