James J. Flannery Aerial Photograph Collection

The James J. Flannery Aerial Photograph Collection consists of hard-copy (paper) air photos acquired from the UWM Department of Geography Flannery Map Library. These air photos cover almost the entire state of Wisconsin, as well as portions of Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Minnesota. The air photos can be viewed at the AGS Library. The air photos cannot be checked out; however, copies can be made.

A list of aerial photo series can be viewed by clicking the link below. The series are organized by state, county, year and project code.

Digital Aerial Photographs

Digital Aerial Photographs

The AGS Library also holds a large selection of digital aerial photographs. Those air photos acquired in digital format can be obtained by the general public, pursuant to license restrictions. (Some air photos are only available to UWM students, faculty and staff for educational purposes.) There is no charge for these images, though a media fee will be charged for those air photos delivered on CDs or DVDs.

Several series of paper aerial photographs for Milwaukee County were scanned and georeferenced by AGS Library staff. The GeoTIFF images for 1936, 1937, 1956, 1963 and 1985 are available for $10 each ($5 each for UWM students, faculty and staff). Please note that only the 1963 series includes the entire county.

Orthophotos

Many of the newer (1995 or later) series of aerial photographs in the AGS Library's collection were acquired as georeferenced and orthorectified images. These images are usually available in either GeoTIFF or MrSID format, and can be obtained by the general public, pursuant to license restrictions. (Some air photos are only available to UWM students, faculty and staff for educational purposes.) There is no charge for these images, though a media fee will be charged for those air photos delivered on CDs or DVDs.

Satellite Imagery

Satellite images are digital images recorded by sensors on orbiting satellites. In a digital sensor, the light is recorded directly as a digital value, making it ideal for working in the computer environment. The digital sensor uses a prism to split light into its individual components, or bands, and records the amount of photons (packets of light) in each band.

The AGS Library Satellite Imagery Collection includes worldwide Landsat images as well as IKONOS and SPOT imagery for the Milwaukee area.
