Should my group use the Group Study Rooms even if I haven't reserved it before hand?

If a group study room is open the best thing to do is to reserve it right away. Before your group wants to use the room. Reservations are real-time and confirmed immediately. If all Group Study Rooms are in use, there are several other group space in the LC, and the hallways between the East and West Wings are also encouraged to be used for collaboration.

If the room isn't being used can I study in the Group Study Room by myself?

No. These rooms are set aside for group work. If you need a quiet space to study, the library has two designated Quiet Study areas: 2nd floor East Wing, beyond the Music Library, and Lower Level East Wing (follow the signs for Compact Shelving). In addition, the desks near the stacks on other floors are usually quiet.
