The UWM Academic Community Nursing Centers
UWM’s College of Nursing operates three community nursing
centers:

Located in the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center on Milwaukee’s
northwest side in the state’s largest subsidized housing development,
this center provides primary care services to residents including a walk-in
clinic. In addition, nursing center staff provides care to residents and
works closely with social workers, teachers, daycare workers and recreation
staff in the neighborhood center to coordinate many other health education
and disease prevention services, such as immunization and flu clinics.
House of Peace Nursing Center
Founded in 1990 with the House of Peace Community Center, Milwaukee

Located at the House of Peace Community Center, a faith-based agency,
this community nursing center emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention
through health education and screening programs. A range of educational
programs for community residents is provided on such topics as nutrition,
exercise, and general health promotion activities. Particular emphasis
has been placed on the provision of both prevention and support services
for families dealing with cancer. Primary care also is provided, including
such services as employment physical exams and women’s health exams.

Located at Franklin Pierce Elementary School, the Riverwest Pierce Nursing
Center is based on the “lighted school house model” in which
neighborhood schools become community resources in areas such as health
care. It provides school-based primary health care and wellness services
for school-aged children and their families who do not have easy access
to health care. Preventive services, such as immunization clinic, and primary
care services, such as physical exams, also are available. |
