Institute for Urban Health Partnerships Initiatives: Research

Practice-Based Research Initiatives

The IUHP conducts ongoing research projects that explore innovative models of health care delivery and their effectiveness in reducing health disparities by improving health outcomes of at-risk populations. Local, state and federal funding has been received from a variety of foundations and governmental agencies including the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the Susan Komen Foundation.

Recent research initiatives include

  • The Midwest Nursing Center Consortium Research Network (MNCCRN): The MNCCRN is funded by the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) as a Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN). The PBRN is a regional research network of academic nursing centers that includes 17 nursing centers in 8 academic institutions
  • Give it Up to Live it Up: Community-based exercise and nutrition project for populations at risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease
  • Wellness for a Lifetime: Community-based exercise and nutrition project studying provider behaviors in supporting healthy lifestyles in eight participating MNCCRN nursing centers
  • Adolescent Pregnancy and Pregnancy Prevention Services: A longitudinal study that utilizes a life options model for adolescent pregnancy prevention and tests community-based case management strategies for parents
  • Automated Community Health Information System: Development and testing of a system that helps assess a community's health, utilized in collaboration with local health departments
  • Outcomes of Advanced Practice Nurse Interventions in African Americans with Type 2 Diabetes. Identifying nurse interventions that help reduce complications from Type 2 diabetes using the Omaha Classification System Type 2 diabetes. Anxiety, Depression, and Positive Funcitoning in Women with Heart Failure: Can Social Role Experiences Make a Difference?

  • Analysis of cost effectiveness of case management as a primary care initiative
  • Impact of W2 on health care practices of vulnerable urban families
  • Analysis of client outcomes associated with nursing interventions as outlined in the Omaha Classification System
