Academic Advising for Doctoral Students

Doctoral students are assisted by a student affairs advisor, an initial faculty advisor, and a major professor.

STUDENT AFFAIRS ADVISOR

The doctoral advisor in the Student Affairs Office helps students with registration, applications, transcripts, and other procedural aspects of the program.

INITIAL FACULTY ADVISOR

Doctoral students also are assigned a faculty member as an initial advisor. This advisor helps students:

  • become oriented to the college
  • interpret the doctoral program design, requirements and policies
  • plan objectives and clarify goals
  • develop an initial plan of study in accordance with program requirements and individual research interests
MAJOR PROFESSOR

Students choose a major professor by the end of the second semester of full-time study or the equivalent in earned credits. The major professor acts as the students research advisor and serves as chairperson of his or her examination committees.
