College of Nursing Scholarships

General Information

The UWM College of Nursing awards several scholarships annually. Up-to-date information, exact deadlines and applications are available in the Nursing Student Affairs Office in Cunningham 135. Applications are available in the Nursing Student Affairs Office four to six weeks before the deadline.

In addition, scholarships are announced to current students on email as they become available.

Please note that many scholarship amounts vary annually, as available funds fluctuate.

Pre-Nursing

Name of Scholarship: Harriet E. Lazinski Scholarship
Total Award 2006-2007: 1 for $1,000
Description: The Harriet E. Lazinski Scholarship is named in honor of an associate professor emerita who served as the associate dean of the undergraduate program at the UWM School of Nursing from 1980 to 1995. Associate Professor Lazinski had a great interest in clinical teaching and devoted much of her time and energy to the provision of quality clinical experiences for undergraduate nursing students. The purpose of the scholarship in her name is to assist a deserving UWM pre-nursing student to make a successful transition into academic life as the first step toward a rewarding professional nursing career.
Eligibility: Graduate from a high school in Milwaukee County; minimum GPA of 3.0; minimum ACT score of 21; written statement of interest in nursing; documented need of financial assistance.

Name of Scholarship: In Honor of Nurses at West Allis Memorial Hospital
Total Award 2006-2007: 1 for $1000
Of Note: This award may be renewed based on the criteria of the fund and the qualifications of the student applicant
Eligibility: Enrollment as a pre-nursing or nursing student, minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, full-time enrollment, demonstrated financial need

Undergraduates

Name of Scholarship: Greater Milwaukee Foundation-Cecilia A. Borenitsch Fund
Total Award 2006-2007: $1,200
Description: One $1,200 scholarship for student in the accelerated program
Eligibility: student enrolled in the Accelerated BS Program; full-time enrollment; resident of Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington or Ozaukee county; minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

Name of Scholarship: Charlotte and Hersh Gellerman Scholarship
Total Award 2006-2007: 1 for $250
Eligibility: Minority student, sophomore level or above, minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75, demonstrated financial need, admitted to the Nursing Clinical Program

Name of Scholarship: Frances H. Cunningham Scholarship
Total Awarded 2006-2007: 1 @ $1,000
Description: The purpose of this fund is to assist needy and deserving undergraduates during the period when enrolled in clinical practice courses. The Frances H. Cunningham Scholarship Trust Fund was started by the first graduating class from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Nursing. Professor Cunningham, from 1964 until her death in 1970, devoted her energy and talent to the establishment and beginning development of the school. Through her outstanding dedication and professionalism, she inspired faculty and students.
Eligibility: Applicants who will enroll in senior level nursing courses (Level IVA or IVB) next fall. Service to community or school will be considered if two applicant are equally needy.

Name of Scholarship: Milton and Joan Morris Scholarship-Traditional Program
Total Award 2006-2007: 1 @$2,000
Description: An estimated 148 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students have received scholarships from this fund since it was established in 1988 by Milton and Joan Morris, in memory of Milton’s brother Samuel. This scholarship supports students with financial need.
Eligibility: Applicant must be in Traditional BS Program. Must have successfully completed Level 3A after being admitted to the clinical program. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Priority given to those with financial need. Scholarship recipient must enroll in all nursing courses required at their level of the program during the period for which they are funded.

Name of Scholarship: The Horizon Home Care & Hospice Scholarship
Total Award 2006-2007: 1 for $2,500
Eligibility:* Open to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in NURS 443 for the Fall 2007 semester who are willing to accept placement for the semester at Horizon Home Care and Hospice.
Deadline: April 6, 2007

Name of Scholarship: Eileen P. Sheil Scholarship
Total Award 2006-2007: 1 for $500
Eligibility: Open to first-generation undergraduate students enrolled in the Nursing program who are residents of Milwaukee .

Name of Scholarship: Wisconsin Rural Opportunities Grant/Loan
Total Award 2006-2007: 4 for $1,000 grant with $1,000 loan to be re-paid
Eligibility: Open to students having some specific background or ties to family farms or identifiable rural areas within the State of Wisconsin.

Name of Scholarship: Milton and Joan Morris Scholarship-Direct Entry Master's Program
Total Award 2006-2007: 2@$2,000
Description: An estimated 148 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students have received scholarships from this fund since it was establish in 1988 by Milton and Joan Morris, in memory of Milton’s brother Samuel. This scholarship supports students with financial need who have been admitted to the Direct Entry Master's Program.
Eligibility:
Applicant must be beginning the Direct Entry Master's Program. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75. Priority given to those with financial need.

Name of Scholarship: Milton and Joan Morris Scholarship- Graduate Application
Total Award for 2006-2007: One doctoral and two master's students will be awarded $2,000 in two installments.
Description: An estimated 148 undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students have received scholarships from this fund since it was establish in 1988 by Milton and Joan Morris, in memory of Milton’s brother Samuel. This scholarship supports students with financial need who have a special interest in chronic health problems or gerontological nursing.
Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated interest in chronic health problems or gerontological nursing

  • Current good standing or admission in good standing to the master’s Program

  • Registration for at least six credit in each of the semester of the academic year

  • Academic scholarship and professional attainment

  • Priority will be given to students with background and experience in serving older adults and chronically ill persons.

Description:
Eligibility: Open to first year and continuing doctoral students. Candidate must be pursuing a focus on community nursing centers and/or nursing of children and families. Preference will be given to students planning full-time study.
