  FILM SCHOLARSHIPS

Graduate Students

At UWM, we have an attractive funding package that enables all of our graduate students to concentrate on producing the best work possible. Uniquely, the majority of those who we accept into out MFA program are awarded teaching assistantships. A teaching assistantship, includes full tuition remission, as well as a stipend. The Film Department annually applies for UWM Chancellor Award Scholarships to supplement this stipend. Though the allotment varies each year, the Chancellor's Graduate Student Award Scholarships are distributed uniformly across the first year MFA candidates. For example, for Fall 2007 we accepted six students. Each of them received a teaching assistantship which waived their tuition, gave them a stipend of approximately $7,000 for the academic year, plus a Chancellor's Award of $5,000. As a teaching assistant, one is generally responsible for working with a professor and teaching one section of a larger lecture course, or an equivalent responsibility as determined by the needs of the department and the skills and interests indicated by you on your teaching assistant application form. All MFA candidates must reapply for the teaching assistantships in February of their first year. Subsequent appointments are not guaranteed, however we have historically awarded them to second year students.
