Controversies over public art are by no means a new phenomenon. Because ‘the public’ is composed of so many different and often competing constituencies, it only follows that anything made for ‘the public’ should meet with controversy. The 1981 dust-up over a group of sculptures then-Milwaukee artist Gene Galazan made for CETA, a federally-funded city art program, echoes contemporary debates. Inova re-presents five of these human-scaled Cor-Ten steel sculptures and some of the historical materials documenting the protest surrounding the two-year incarceration of the sculptures in a city warehouse. The sculptures were eventually released, but into relative obscurity rather than vital public space. This exhibition aims, in part, to restore a public to the sculptures.

Dancemakers: Inside and Outside of the Box
Friday, 07/25/2008 – 7:30 p.m.

New works by our graduate students—a diverse group of professional choreographers and performers from all points of the compass.

PROGRAM A Friday, July 25 at 7:30 pm
PROGRAM B Saturday, July 26 at 7:30 pm

The UWM Peck School of the Arts Dance Department will offer its eighth formal concert of graduate student work, Dancemakers: Inside and Outside of the Box, on July 25 and July 26 Each night will feature a different program. Dancemakers showcases work by the professional dancers and choreographers who travel to Milwaukee each summer to pursue graduate degrees. A reception follows the Friday evening performance.

Janet Lilly, artistic director of the concert, chose to highlight the varied approaches to space and movement in this year’s pieces, and she encourages audiences to arrive by 7:15 to catch some of the dancing that is taking place “outside the box,” in the courtyards and lobby of the theatre. Clare Tallon Ruen’s choreography welcomes the audience both evenings, followed by John Mario Sevilla’s take on traditional hula performance. Lenny Cruz’s transformative solo will open the second half of the program, and the evening concludes with Keely Garfield in the west courtyard—and way out in left field—performing First Attempt in a yellow butterfly chair.

The participating choreographers this year, in addition to Tallon Ruen, Sevilla, Cruz and Garfield, are Fareedha Williams-Appah, Eric Jackson Bradley, Jackie Brenner, Kimani Fowlin, Kate Hewson, Holly Jaycox, Stacy Pottinger, James Robey and Miki Saba. They were mentored by Lilly, Iain Court, Debra Loewen, André Tyson and Luc Vanier.

Joann Engelhart offers three intensive workshops that explore different dyeing methods. Workshops are open to beginners (no prior experience necessary) and more seasoned dyers interested in learning a new technique. In each workshop, you will create six yards of unique fabric to use in garments, quilts or home décor.

Shibori Dyeing
June 20-22
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Learn new and traditional methods of pattern resists for dye-baths. Clamp, fold, pleat, stitch, wrap and encase objects to create unusual patterns in cloth. Re-dye the fabric several times to achieve layers of color and patterns. Even better... use both fiber reactive dyes and vat dyes to create gorgeous additional colors and halos caused by chemical reactions between the dyes.

Indigo Dyeing
July 11-13 Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Create beautifully patterned deep blue, medium blue or cobalt blue fabrics by using shibori methods of folding, clamping, pleating, stitching, pole-wrapping and encasing objects in cloth. Using both fiber-reactive dyes and vat dyes enables you to achieve blue with yellow, tan and other colors.

Batik Dyeing
July 25-27 Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Wonderful crackle patterns are an inherent part of this timeless process of fabric dyeing. Hot wax is applied to areas of cloth before immersing the fabric in a dye bath. Many layers of beautiful, subtle color can be achieved by reapplying wax and re-dyeing the fabric.
