BFA Curriculum

The Department of Music string faculty helps students to prepare for modern, multifaceted professional careers as performers and/or teachers of chamber ensemble, orchestral, and solo repertory. The faculty comprises some of the string world’s most versatile musicians, respected as teachers and active as recitalists, soloists, and chamber musicians.
Undergraduate string students receive a thorough grounding in instrumental technique and repertory, and broad and continuous experience in performance. Teachers are continuously involved in the instruction, coaching, and performance of solo and orchestral repertory and chamber music, and students have numerous opportunities for intensive and directed exploration of the literature.
There are more than 20 performing groups at UWM, including the Symphony Orchestra, University Community Orchestra (UCO), Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, the UWM Choirs, Opera Theatre, Musical Theatre, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Brass Choir, Music from Almost Yesterday, Music on the Move, several chamber ensembles including the Leonard Sorkin International Institute of Chamber Music (ICM), and string convocation, as well as faculty, student and class recitals throughout the school year. Orchestral string players spend four years in a full symphony where they rehearse and perform symphonic, choral, and operatic repertory. Undergraduates also have two to four semesters of chamber music coaching and performance.
In addition, students have the opportunity to compete in the annual UWM and UCO concerto competitions, the Civic Music Association Collegiate Competition, and the Wisconsin NPR Neale-Silva Young Artists’ Competition in Madison. Milwaukee and the surrounding area are home to many orchestras: the internationally acclaimed Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Ballet, the Florentine Opera, as well as the Racine, Waukesha, Kenosha and Sheboygan Symphony Orchestras. Opportunities abound for qualified string players who want to audition for these performing arts organizations.
