Music Chair's Letter
Welcome to the UWM Peck School of the Arts Department of Music home. We are pleased to hear of your interest in our department and programs. The Department of Music maintains a very active performance schedule with ensembles, student and faculty recitals and guest performers. For a schedule of upcoming performances, visit the Peck School of the Arts Events page, which lists concerts and events presented by the Department of Music along with other Peck School of the Arts events.
The Department of Music faculty represents professionals from around the world: some of the strongest in the country. You will study with an artist-teacher who maintains an active professional career. We pride ourselves on utilizing regular faculty members for undergraduate courses (even freshman classes). Our faculty takes the time to get to know you personally, and with our low 10-to-1 student-faculty ratio, you get the individual attention you deserve. The UWM large and chamber ensembles enjoy national and international reputation, performing throughout the United States and the globe. The Department of Music has a faculty of 65 full and part-time members in strong partnership with the Milwaukee Orchestra and is a fully-accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The department is comprised of up to 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Add to this the advantage of a vibrant urban location that puts students in the cultural mainstream of a thriving and sophisticated metropolis of over one million people.
The Department of Music offers BFA, BA and MM academic and performance degrees, and artist certificates in Chamber Music, Rock & Roll and Opera and Vocal Arts. Undergraduate Degree programs and Graduate programs are available in Music Education, Music History, Music Performance, Chamber Music, Multiple Winds, Jazz Studies, String Pedagogy, and Composition and Technology. While professional training is the main thrust of the UWM music curricula, the department offers many personal enrichment courses for the non-Music major. Private or class music lessons are also available to non-Music majors who have a successful audition; consent of instructor and availability of instructional time; and concurrent registration in an approved Music Performance organization.
A metropolitan university in the state's largest city, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has an enrollment of 30,000 students and is a residential campus with several new and beautifully appointed residence halls. Milwaukee consists of a diverse community with myriad interesting cultural neighborhoods. Music in Milwaukee is represented most prominently by the world-class Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Florentine Opera Company, Skylight Opera Theatre and Milwaukee Opera Theatre, along with many other professional theatre, community and semi-professional performing groups. The University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee is in a unique position to take advantage of these resources.
The Department of Music is one of five academic units (Art & Design, Dance, Film, Theatre) in the only school of the arts in the upper Midwest, the Peck School of the Arts. The Department of Music boasts a 350-seat recital hall, the Helene Zelazo Performing Arts Center, the 750-seat Bader Concert Hall, the Kenwood Music Building, providing fully-mediated, well-equipped classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and practice rooms, and the Kenilworth Square East six-story digital arts and media center. These centers serve as a nexus of musical activity, not only for the university, but for the city of Milwaukee as well.
If you are willing to work hard and devote your time and effort toward the many high-quality experiences we provide, the Department of Music is the academic choice for you.
