Post-Baccalaureate Reading Specialist
UWM's Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers the Reading Specialist Program, for certified classroom teachers who have a special interest in reading.
The Reading Specialist Certification program may be taken by students admitted either as a post-baccalaureate student (special student) or as part of a graduate degree. Students must formally apply to UWM using either the post-baccalaureate or graduate program process to participate in a reading certification program.
What can the Reading Specialist Certification Program do for your and your students?
• Early Reading Empowerment is a proven program with research (Mertzman & Short, 2007, 2009) showing that it has raised reading achievement for students who struggle with reading in many districts across the state
• Early Reading Empowerment meets the criteria for Response To Intervention (RTI) and addresses issues involving overidentification of students of color and of poverty
• Reading Teacher and Reading Specialist licensure programs can create reading professionals who can address the issues of elementary, middle and high schools who have not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)
