Early Adolescence to Adolescence (Ages 10-21)
The Exceptional Education Department at UWM prepares special education teachers who have a commitment to a diverse group of student with disabilities serving in schools and community settings. Our intent is to prepare teachers who are versed in both practical and the visionary. Our certification program leads to a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) teaching license of Early Adolescence to Early Adolescence (EAA) for ages 10-21.The program is offered as an undergraduate degree or a 2yr post-baccalaureate certificate, both leading to the Wisconsin Early Adolescence to Adolescence Special Education certification and both require admission to the program.
EAA Post-Baccalaureate
This is a certificate of completion program for individuals that already hold a Bachelor's Degree. Upon completion students will be eligible for the Initial Special Education Teacher License from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for ages 10-21 (grades 6-12). Furthermore, it can lead to a Master's Degree in Exceptional Education.
Admission The EAA Post-Bac program is a cohort model that begins in the summer. To apply to the EAA Post-Bac program download the post-baccalaureate application packet for program information and the admission process. The department application is listed on pages 11 and 12 of the packet and includes a complete checklist of the application requirements.
InternshipThe Early Adolescence to Adolescence Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification is a part of the UWM/MPS Internship Program. The UWM/MPS Special Education Internship Program is an innovative program that prepares teachers to provide special education services at the early childhood, middle or high school level.

EAA Special Education Undergraduate Degree
The EAA Special Education undergraduate degree is a course of study (major) leading to a Bachelor of Science in Exceptional Education. Upon completion students will have earned a Bachelor's degree and will be eligible to apply for a Cross-categorical Special Education Teacher License from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for ages 10-21 (Grades 6-12).
Admission Students must be at Junior standing (58 credits) and have a 2.5 GPA in order to apply for the EAA program. During the first two years of college students are working towards completion of admission requirements and general education requirements (GER's).
Upon completion of the admission coursework, students will need to apply to the Department of Exceptional Education. The application is found below. The EAA program is a cohort model that begins Fall semester. Applications are due April 1 of the Fall semester year of wanted entry. For example, a student wanting to start the EAA program Fall semester of 2013, would need their application submitted by April 1, 2013. Even if the student has not officially completed their coursework at the time of application, but will do so before Fall semester, should submit the application. Submitting an application does not grant automatic admission to the EAA program.
