Curriculum & Instruction Specialization
The ProgramThe specialization in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) will give you an opportunity to improve your professional experiences with those you teach, the educational contexts in which you work, and your disciplinary and content knowledge.

The specialization in Curriculum and Instruction combines theoretical and disciplinary content knowledge, practical experiences and scholarly activities. The program prepares education professionals to work in such varied settings as schools, colleges and universities, school district central offices, government agencies, community organizations and private consulting. Graduates of the program are prepared for such leadership roles as curriculum directors, instructional coordinators, school partnership coordinators, applied researchers, professional development coordinators and professors.

The C&I specialization focuses on:

•Providing thoughtful perspectives and insights into the future directions of Curriculum and Instruction
•Integrating theory and practice in education to various situations, problems and contexts
•Providing leadership related to Curriculum and Instruction activities and programs
•Designing and conducting research on significant educational content, practices and contexts

Program Requirements

The student must meet all of the program requirements of the Urban Education Doctoral Program including:

Urban Education Doctoral Seminars
(minimum 9 credits)
  • EDUC 701 - Urban Education Issues
  • CURRINS 801 - Urban Education: Curriculum & Instruction
  • EDUC 901 - Advanced Seminar in Urban Education
Research Design and Methodology (minimum 15 credits)
  • ED PSY 724 - Educational Statistical Methods II (prerequisite is ED PSY 624 and ED PSY )
  • AD LDSP/CURRINS 729 - Qualitative Research and Field Studies in Education Settings 
  • At least nine credits of additional advanced level coursework (800 or above) from either a qualitative or quantitative track
Minor In a related discipline that supports the student's program of studies.
  • Option A: 8 or more credits in a single department outside of the School of Education.
  • Option B: 6 or more credits in each of two departments, with at least one department outside of the school.
A minimum of 9 credits in advanced, general Curriculum & Instruction courses:•CURRINS 813 - Instructional Research & Theory (3cr)
•CURRINS 816 - Curriculum Design for Urban Schools (3 cr)
•CURRINS 819 - Theory & Design of Curriculum (3 cr)

A minimum of 15 credits in one of the following Curriculum & Instruction areas of interest:
•Content Area (e.g., reading)
•Education Level (e.g. early childhood)
•General Area (e.g., curriculum theory)
•Special Area (e.g., guiding instructional improvement)

Preliminary Examinations
The preliminary examination will include a section covering the student's Curriculum & Instruction specialization.

Dissertation

A dissertation with an emphasis in Curriculum & Instruction is required. The dissertation chair/major professor must be an approved doctoral advisor and a member of the Curriculum & Instruction department.
 

Exit Requirements

Contingent upon satisfactory completion of program requirements, the preliminary qualifying examination, and the successful oral defense of the dissertation, the Director of the Urban Education Doctoral Program will give final approval for the inclusion of "Curriculum & Instruction" on the student's transcript.
