Ambassadors & Mentors

DSC_5288_1

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Campus Ambassadors (CAs) are a prestigious group of students who are called upon for their leadership and contributions to the life and culture of the University. CAs participate in a variety of campus activities, initiatives, and mentoring designed to enhance the experience of all new students, help achieve the University’s goals, and further promote its schools, colleges and other campus units. The 2013-2014 Campus Ambassadors have been a dynamic group of individuals who helped welcome about 5,000 new students and their families to the UWM community.

What Campus Ambassadors do

  • Connect new students to UWM during Orientation programs.
  • Provide positive mentoring to new students throughout the academic year.
  • Contribute a sense of UWM community, pride, spirit and tradition.
  • Provide student perspective and leadership in shaping UWM campus initiatives.
  • Represent the best of UWM at on and off-campus UWM sponsored activities and functions.

Peer Mentors focus on providing continuous mentoring and programming to engage all students. Students who engage with the academic and social aspects of college are much more successful and satisfied with their college experience than those who do not. An effective way to help students engage is through mentoring and supportive activities. UWM is committed to providing active mentoring to all of its students throughout their entire college experience. You'll receive emails from your Peer Mentor inviting you to campus events, informing you of campus opportunities and connecting you to other students.

Meet the 2013-2014 Student Success Center Mentors!

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Not going to lie, this is going to sound super cheesy; but I wouldn't really want to be anyone else than who I am. Yes I've gone through some rough patches, but who hasn't; even the most famous figures out there have gone through rough patches. Life in general isn't perfect, but I would want to be myself in everything I do.
Hidden talents? I don't think a lot of people know that I love to bake, I used to have a lot more free time and after I would be done with my homework I would like to make cakes and pies and desserts in general.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My best advice to first-year students is to get to know new people, get involved, but only to do what they can handle. I do believe it's important for students to get to know some classmates of theirs because it makes school that much easier. My first year I wasn't too involved with people on campus because I commuted, but now that I'm involved and with an on campus job, I feel more welcomed.

If I could be any famous figure I would be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. No matter what race or class you are, if you live in the U.S. you've heard of MLKJr. and know all about his work. If it weren't for him I wouldn't have the privileges that I do today. I would like to be him

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would be Erin Gruwell, an incredibly loving, talented, understanding, and hardworking teacher. If you’ve ever seen Freedom Writers, she was the teacher who inspired that movie. She is the reason I want to teach in inner city schools. I want to make a difference/impact just like she did so I can better youths’ lives.
Hidden Talents? If I run long enough, I can have an asthma attack…. Other than that, nothing.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Manage your time wisely; use a planner for schoolwork, and a different calendar for anything else in your agenda. This will help you keep organized, will help you achieve good grades, and will help you maintain your stress.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would be Chavela Vargas, a famous Mexican singer. Although Chavela Vargas is before my time, I believe she is one of the most talented people to have sung rancheras, which are traditional Mexican songs. Also, I admire her because she was a very independent and smart individual.
Hidden Talents? One of my hidden talents would have to be poetry. I love to write it, hear it, and read it.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I could give to a first-year student at UWM would be to not be afraid; to not be afraid of immersing yourself in new ideas, activities, and chances at meeting people.

Hidden Talents? I can wiggle my ears.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Get involved with an organization on campus that you believe in, it makes your college experience more enjoyable, and opens opportunities that you would not normal run across.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would want to be Khloe Kardashian because she is not only real and expresses how she truly feels but she is also really smart and uses that to help others by giving back to the community and speaks out about important issues to help enlighten the public on ways to fix them. I believe that she as an important model for using the talent and the brains she has been given in giving back to the community.
Hidden Talents? A hidden talent that I have and not very many people know this is that I can pop my hip out of place. It sounds like it hurts to people, but it really does not hurt.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: I would say that it is extremely important to do the best you can in school and take advantage of your professors, SI, and other resources to help you gain the most but also to find out what works best for you. Using these resources has definitely helped me see a huge improvement in grades and helps me grow as a person. And also, remember to have fun. Go to UWM Social Events so that you can make new friends. It helps you feel like you are not alone in this new stage of your life

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Beyoncé!! She's so fabulous, yet humble. She also gets to travel the world and I would love that!
Hidden talents? I speak some Japanese. I'm a ballerina too!
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Know that your best is good enough! Don't be too hard on yourself. Also, get to know your professors -- it's easier to ask for help or letters of recommendation when you have gotten to know them.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would be Murphy or Connor from the Boondock Saints. They take down all the horrible criminals in their city. They fight for justice and although their acts are illegal, they have some members of the police force and FBI on their side. This shows you just how bad the guys they take down really are. They are just normal brothers and look out for each other no matter what, which is how I am about my siblings. Also, they are fluent in many languages and are just awesome in general.
Hidden Talents? None
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Have fun, but always keep your goals in mind. That will help drive your choices in the right direction.
 Meranda
Michael Fenner
Majors/Minors/Certificates:
Music Performance in Finger-Style Guitar
Hometown: Auckland, New Zealand
Year in School: Sophomore
Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: Music Living Learning Community, Alpha Lambda Delta (First Year Honor Society), and National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would like to be Jack White. I used to play guitar in his style and it would be fun to perform live playing like he does. Being able to tour the world and share his music seems like an ideal life for me. He also owns his own recording label and helps others share their music.
Hidden Talents? Scuba diving, surfing and boxing! These are all common activities back home in New Zealand but not so much here in Wisconsin. I can also play guitar well, but that’s not hidden and I can paint a fair bit.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Make sure you balance your schedule. Don’t get overwhelmed with your schoolwork but don’t slack off. Make sure you have time to socialize and get some “me time”. If all you do is study then you are going to struggle and get stressed. Studying and doing your work is important but it’s important to have a good balance.
 Michael F
Mitch Horn
Majors/Minors/Certificates:
Mechanical Engineering
Hometown: Mukwonago, WI
Year in School: Sophomore
Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: Water Ski Team
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would need to choose Ringo Starr, the drummer of the Beatles. Though he is a lesser known Beatle he is a great musician and a nice guy (I have never personally met him, but I have heard he is!). He is now the leader of his own band, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. So the leader aspect is a great thing too. Fun fact: Ringo Starr and I have the same birthday!
Hidden Talents? I don’t really have any hidden talents….my not so hidden talent would probably be my water skiing skills. Since I am a part of a show ski team as well as a competitive team, I have a plethora of abilities. My proudest talent in water skiing is my ability to do a heli (a 360) off the top of the jump.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My biggest advice to students would be to stay involved. You need to find balance in school. You can’t be all about studies and you can’t be all about socializing. Finding that balance will keep your stress down, your grades up, and ultimately cause you to have a great college experience.

: I am involved in AMA (American Marketing Association) and WIB (Women in Business). I am also involved in the Lubar Multicultural Program and a Lubar Ambassador for Sheldon B Lubar School of Business. Lastly, I am a Lawton Scholar.
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I were to be a famous figure, I would be Ellen DeGeneres as she makes an impact in many lives and also mine. It’s important for her to let others know what is going on around the world and how to make a difference. She’s very outgoing, always making people laugh and bringing a smile to someone’s face and I think that’s a very good quality to have.
Hidden Talents? Unfortunately, I do not have any hidden talents.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My advice for a first yaer student at UWM is the advice I gave myself when I first came to UWM and that is to be open minded to new experiences and to take as many opportunities as you can during your college career.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Joan of Arc because she is a strong female figure who was willing to sacrifice everything she had for the better of her people.
Hidden Talents? Really good at Table Tennis.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Do not wait until the last minute to do your work, and make sure to try new things within the Milwaukee community. Don’t be afraid to talk and meet new people. If you need help, do not be afraid to ask for it.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I would be Mila Kunis because she’s funny, gorgeous, and loveable.
Hidden Talents? I’m super artsy. I’ve played piano since I was 5, I was in musicals all of middle school and high school, I used to dance ballet, I still currently dance hip-hop, and I love drawing and photography.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Do not skip class. It’s easier to maintain good grades and a high GPA than it is to bring up a GPA.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Jimmy Fallon, because I think that he is the funniest person on TV, and I look up to him as a role model. I can do impressions of some celebrities. The work that I am doing in my theatre class is inspiring me to become just like him. Another reason is that he helped me get through my first semester here at UWM because I would get so worried before an exam that my way of calming myself down was a Grind hot chocolate and his videos that I subscribe to on YouTube he would make me laugh and then I would be relaxed and ready for the test. One day I want to make people laugh just like he does on his show.
Hidden Talents? I can do some impressions of people on TV, plus you can name me any sports team (NFL, NBA, or MLB) can I can most likely name the stadium that the team plays in.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: If you are the kind of person that gets really anxious and worried before an exam, I would say find a way that is unique to you to calm yourself down before the test, like listen to music, or watch your favorite TV show online. In addition to studying well, doing your homework and seeing your professors during office hours, seeing a tutor will help achieve the grades you want. I did all of those and I am very happy with my results and the relationships I formed with my professors during my first year.

Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: I have previous affiliation with the Student Association on campus, along with other student run governmental bodies. I’ve been involved in many intramural sports & recreation leagues, perfecting the left handed layup. I spend a considerable amount of time enjoying the numerous available outdoor options at the Urban Ecology Center. There are many student involvement opportunities here at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. I even dabble on my Roland Sythesizer at an Electronic Dance Music student run organization. A constant yearning for Pizza Shuttle slices, and games of Milwaukee Bucks and Panthers Basketball!
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I’m traveling back in time, You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension: a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into... Daniel Burnham’s office he’s working on the Master Plan for Washington DC’s National Mall. Cities are beautiful living breathing organisms, I have an appreciation for DC and the ideals it represents.
Hidden Talents? I’ve been regarded as a more youthful Emeril Lagasse. My kitchen affinity is strong, with swift like spicing tosses. Also, it’s rumored I can dance well...I’ve literally won America’s Best Dance Crew. :S
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Don’t remain anonymous on campus, begin your campus year with strong involvement. Use all of UWM’s many resources for success; you want to succeed, your friends and family want to see you succeed, as well as your instructors. Also, be reasonable set goals, achieve goals and revise new ones. Go Panthers!

Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: UWM Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research and Alpha Lambda Delta (First Year Honor Society). Otherwise, I’m a gym rat and health nut so you might see me running around campus or at Klotsche.
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? Hayao Miyazaki. Ever seen Princess Mononoke? My Neighbour Totoro? How about Spirited Away? He’s the creator and artistic genius behind these films. His work is not only entertaining for all ages, his combination of plot and animations are breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
Hidden Talents? Besides being Canadian (trust me, it’s a talent within itself), I can skip with my arms, wink poorly with both eyes, write with both hands, and bake a mean chocolate cake.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Find a balance between school, your social life, and sleep. Make lists, prioritize, and even utilize the on-campus resources to help you succeed. Plus, you can always stop by the Student Success Center to visit your friendly neighbourhood peer mentor if you need advice or someone to talk to(and yes, the Canadian spelling of neighbourhood requires me to add a “u”).

Hidden Talents? Not that it’s really hidden, but I’ve played the piano for 11 years.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Don’t get too caught up in what you think the college experience should be. This is the one part of your life when it’s okay to be completely selfish. So, do what’s best for you and focus on what you want to accomplish. It’s scary sometimes because you might be trying something new by yourself, but you’re given so many opportunities at this point in time, so it would be unfair to not take advantage of them all.

Clubs/Organizations/Activities you’re involved in on campus: Canoeing Wilderness Adventures and Scuba Diving. I was also an Orientation Leader.
If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? I don’t want to be anyone else no matter how successful they are because I believe you came original, so don’t be a copy. Yet, I would love to be a snow leopard because there are only 6000 left in the wild, I’d enjoy the fun of being the only mammal to survive on the highest peaks of the Himalayas. How can you miss that?
Hidden Talents? I am an animal. Only unleashed in the GYM.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Work hard, play harder. Stop being a part of soft generation who are scared to feel pain. Always remember someone is out there working harder to get better grades than you. You can enjoy the simple pleasures in the present but the ultimate gift is when you sit down with the best GPA and say I FINALLY MADE IT.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I would be my hero, Charles Lindbergh because he was the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. He inspired the world to not only fly, but to chase their dreams and take a risk. I would love to serve as such an inspiration to people.
Hidden Talents? I can touch my nose with my tongue!
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My advice to first year students is to live in Sandburg because that way you will be right in the middle of campus and everything is in such a short walking distance, not to mention you will be more obligated to attend events. Also, accept that this is a new chapter in your life and live it to the fullest; go to that basketball game and cheer at the top of your lungs, introduce yourself to the shy student in class and most importantly, have fun and do what makes you happy.

Hidden Talents? First I am incredible at ultimate Frisbee, and I can grill a fantastic burger.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: I would say to have real conversations with your professors. It is a really refreshing moment for professors to see that their students can talk to adults. Hidden Talents? I love to run!
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Really focus on time management. If you budget your time to get lots of work done during the week, you can relax and have fun on the weekends. However, you also need to know when to say no to going out with your friends, because studying for an exam or doing homework you need to get done is more important.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure it would be Erin Brockovich. She may not be famous to many people, but as an aspiring lawyer, her raw talent and caring nature is inspiring.
Hidden Talents? I sing, tap dance, and play the saxophone. I was the ideal band nerd in high school and I loved every moment of it. I also play volleyball and waitress at The American Club.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice that I would give to a first-year student at UWM is to not be afraid to make a fool of yourself. Don’t always care what other people think. Be yourself, it has gotten you where you are today and it will help you to get where you need to be. Don’t be scared of the changes happening around you. Use all of your struggles and triumphs as learning lessons.

Hidden Talents?
I used to do card and magic tricks when I was younger and am still able to do them to a degree. I also partook in Ukrainian Dancing a couple of years ago, and am still able to perform.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Take full advantage of all the opportunities that UWM provides. The more you take advantage of them, the better of an experience you can have at UWM. Not only will you connect socially and you will academically succeed and be better at problem solving and making important, difficult decisions.

Hidden Talents? I have never lost a competitive game of dodgeball.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Utilize your professor’s office hours. It shows that you care about your grade and it makes you more than just a name on an attendance roster.

Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable. I hear I will forget, I see I will probably remember, I interact I will understand. Remember to always start things early, so you can do them in small bits. If you do things in small bits, you will have a greater chance to remember and understand them. Also, you should evaluate what is best for you and be sure you like what you are doing. Commitment is one of the few things that will keep you going and going well. As the old wise man once said, “If you really have to get your feet wet, then you are better off taking a swim”

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why?  I would want to be like Oprah Winfrey because of her philanthropic work, support of minorities, and her determination through the various obstacles she has faced in her life.
Hidden Talents? I love to have parties where I cook and bake for my family and friends. I also have a bizarre and vast knowledge of random trivia and I like to think that I am an exceptional driver.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: The best advice I could give would be to never be afraid to ask questions whether they are about a particular class, where something is, or who can help you with a problem because professors respect students that ask questions. Also to be open to all opportunities because you never know if something will spark an interest in you and also because college is full of new experiences that can only help you to grow as a person.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure, I would be Justin Timberlake because I would love the opportunity to experience being a famous actor and songwriter.
Hidden Talents? Not too much of a hidden talent, but I love sports! I've played football, basketball, volleyball, and wrestled in the past, and continue to play whenever I can.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: My advice is that your first year as a college student is the foundation for the next four years. You shouldn't set your goals too high, but instead should relax and try to make new friends and make connections with your professors. Also, joining organizations early is great because you will meet other students who are probably taking or have already taken your courses. Lastly, take advantage of the tutoring through PASS. It's free, and you will make new friends while understanding your course.

If you could be any famous figure, who would it be and why? If I could be any famous figure I think I would be Jimi Hendrix. Why would I want to be this person in particular? I play guitar and Jimi did so much in the short time he was alive that pushed music and musicians to develop new techniques. His use of gain and extensive use of the wah-wah peddle really helped him develop his own style at the time. Jimi left his mark on this world through his own artistic way.
Hidden Talents? I have a great Arnold Schwarzenegger impression down.
Best advice you could give a first-year student at UWM: One of the best ways I find is with the use of a planner.
